New audio build ( need help! )

Hello everyone, first time poster here!

I'm getting ready to upgrade my computer speakers in a week or two from Logitech Z-5500's to something built around an Epik Legend subwoofer. However, not being real keen on the subject, I am curious what kind of cabling, receiver, and speakers I should go with. I have tried many times to get ahold of the people at Epik Subwoofer, because I am sure they would have good insight. However, they're pretty hard to reach so I am seeking advice elsewhere.

The budget is around $800-1000, and will be for gaming/music/movies, so something that can provide the best sound in all areas would be great. I am not sure weather or not to go with bookshelf speakers, or floorstanding speakers. Or what amp to buy, and what cabling it will all require. It doesn't have to be over 2.1, as that would be ideal for me.

Thank you for any comments and suggestions!!

If these are for a computer, what kind of placement/size restrictions do you have for the speakers? A pic of the area they would be placed would be even more helpful.

These are for a normal sized room. I wear a size 6.5 shoe, and I measure 16x16, normal height ceilings. Speakers will be in a corner where my desk is.

Here's a rough layout, I can change it if it would provide space/better sound.

I suggest a pair of Audioengine 2 powered speakers; they are very good and only $200. I use those on my computer table and have a Sony subwoofer connected to them.

Those look pretty nice, and small too. The 30 day trial if you buy them is a good incentive to try them as well. I'll keep them in mind smile.gif)

Just an update-

I am considering:
Sub: http://epiksubwoofers.com/legend.html
Receiver: Sony STR-DH520 7.1
Speakers: http://audioengineusa.com/Store/Audioengine-P4

These will all work in unison right?

Sure.

Although unless you are buying the Sony receiver used and getting a good deal on it, you don't really see recommendations for Sony receivers in this forum. In the same price range for an AVR, look at the Denon 1612 (here's a review). Or for a little more, you can get the HK 3490 2 channel receiver which does have optical inputs.

I am curious about something though, on the HK it says " Digital Audio In " which is what I want to use. On the Denon, it's labeled as a Digital (tv) in. Are they the same thing?

The HK has one coxial and optical input. The Denon has one optical, one coaxial, and 4 hdmi inputs. So if your computer sound card has an optical or digital coxial out, either of these would work well.
