They Live Special Edition from Shout! Factory - Page 3

Got mine today!

Love the BUY sticker on the front cover. Should of had a VOTE sticker as well. I was kinda ticked this didn't come out in time for Halloween but now the release date make more sense.

How long did it take to ship/process your order?
Anyone else having problems getting this from Amazon? It was supposed to arrive yesterday, but it hasn't even shipped yet.

I had pre-ordered mine a couple of weeks after it was announced.
I got an email on Monday saying it had shipped. Tuesday it was on my doorstep.

Received it today.

You wouldn't half know that Universal supplied the master for this.

Looks like hammer dog ****.

DNR, EE, clumped grain,(what's left of it). Resembles nothing that could be called 'film-like', whatsoever.

Avoid, or wait until it's heavily discounted.

Shout Factory? S*** Factory, more like.

Wow, this is very bad news. Very.

edit: 3.5 stars on HDD. 4 stars on BR.com. The plot thickens.

If you are really this dissatisfied, contact shout factory and let them know. Report their response here.

I'm still waiting for DVD Empire to ship my copy of the Sh*t Factory release; but I have two copies, long story, of the Italian Blu-ray Disc in the mail. I've heard it is much-more film like. I'm tempted to cancel the US release. Are the extras note worthy?
The best extra is still the Carpenter/Piper commentary.

The new interviews aren't worth shelling out for, although they do add up to over 30mins of new content.
I criticized a couple of the blu ray PQ/AQ reviews on another forum before. They weren't even close to being accurate. Got banned for my trouble.

S Factory doesn't answer their phones or their emails, so who knows when I'll get this, or what I'll get.

I left this on their Facebook page:

So, whose head do I have to demand on a stick, for the awful They Live transfer? Seriously, you should be embarrassed to release this nonsense, even more so then the schills giving it okay, to glowing reviews on the net. Man up,tell us the truth. Was this Universal's fault? Given the amount of **** that they dare pass off as HD, I dare say it was.

Of course it's going to be Universal's transfer, I could have told you that 5 months ago.

I thought the screenshots looked overly sharpened and waxy, but I wanted so badly to attribute it to capture error. I would have shelled out the cash if they had done a great job, but it sounds like bargain bin only.

I just watched this movie... what a load of crap^.

the movie looked wonderful, great saturation and smooth texture lacking any grain or sharpness issues.

I great buy if you love this movie... you will have certainly never seen it better. I would even go as far to say that although this isn't reference material, it didn't look this good in the theaters.

That's good to hear. smile.gif

I think some people just get carried away with their criticisms. Their anger is so overwhelming the credibility of their opinion is lost. It's like the school bully who's desperate for attention. The more they misbehave, they more attention they receive.

I got this disc last night. I couldn't claim to be an expert but skipping through some chapters there's some clear noise reduction going on. Not at all disastrous but probably in the same ballpark as the Flash Gordon USA release. A bit disappointing considering how great HII and HIII looked, but not awful in my opinion. Interestingly I saw the film a couple of weeks ago theatrically at a JC all-nighter and for obvious reasons the print looked more natural. As has been said above though it generally looks way better than my DVD R2 special edition. I also watched some of the new disc's interviews and they're great but very brief! You want more as they're so interesting - Mr. Carpenter hasn't lost any of his spirit.

I have to say... I think this might be more a function of your equipment... on the OPPO the movie looks to be quite good. As I said, not quite reference levels... but pretty darn excellent.

Off-topic: Is there another release of Flash Gordon on Blu-ray Disc that doesn't have as much DNR? If so, please let me know where I can buy it!

On-topic: Regarding DNR in this release. The DNR is pretty clear. If you can't see it, you either don't know how to look for it or don't want to see it. However, I will admit that sometimes it helps to have a frame of reference. Fortunately, in this case, there is one. Take a look at the difference between the Italian and US releases:

I don't see negative noise reduction(the reduction I see is for the better reducing film grain)... but I do see saturation and contrast adjustments... for the better. there is also quite a bit of sharpening.

You don't see "negative" noise reduction in the second link of Nagys comparison? I'm afraid I can't help you then. Enjoy the US release.

Well, there's your key words.
Unfortunately, it's pretty obviously there.
It's not a disaster when comparing those caps above, but it certainly is noise reduced to a fault. It simply should have been left alone.
Looks like the standard Universal crap, I am shocked anyone is surprised at this point

That's what stands out to me. It's not the worst transfer I've ever seen, but pretty mediocre. A shame.
