You can take the big plastic part off of the Xbox 360 cable and expose the underlying metal piece. It pops right off with a small flathead screw driver.

I used to have my 360 hooked up via HDMI and VGA at the same time to different sources by doing that, because I was tired of swapping the cables every time.

I'm not sure though if you can do optical audio from one connection and HDMI video from the other though.

Without numbers, what do you think, Is it really such big difference?
I'm trying to choose between Panny AE8000 and Epson TW9000/9100(6010/6020). Primery parameter is brightness, because of huge screen. I would buy Epson, but I fell in love with Panny's "lens memory" function. Also I'm preetty sure that epson's FI doesn't work in 3D.

8000u installed tonight replacing my trusty 4000u which has been rock solid for 3 years. Only got about 30 min to play with it, but some very quick first impressions:
- picture quality noticeably better than the 4000u, woohoo!
- the lens shift joystick...disaster. The horizontal and vertical dials on the 4000u were a joy to use...the joystick is horrible. Took me way longer to align the 8000u than I thought because of this.
- flipped on Tron Legacy to watch my first ever 3D content at home. First of all, it just popped off the screen. Great picture. I'll have to play with all the settings in the coming days but great out of the box.
- but wait...auto-detect for lens memory doesn't work in 3D??? Worked great in 2D...the menu option for auto-detect is greyed out in 3D mode...weird!

Not much time at all to play with it...more to come!

Lens memory doesn't work in 3D mode of AE7000, but it must work on AE8000.

I am looking at getting on of these but wanted to know on a 2.35:1 screen do you get the overspill of light top and bottom or can that be masked off.

If the area of (behind) the 2.35:1 screen is matt black, you won't see the overspill of light. But you will see vertical dark grey bars on left and right side, when you watch 16/9 content on 2.35/1 screen.

Does your projector come with the two glasses?

I had a box from the EU version of the AE8000 (AT6000e) in front of me without any glasses...

What would be the pros of the new Panasonic compared to the new Sony HW50?

According to the projector central review it should:
"Lens Memory now works in 3D. A number of features that only worked in 2D on the AE7000 now work in 3D as well. Among these are the powered zoom, powered focus, and Lens Memory system. If you prefer a brighter 3D image and want to shrink down the picture when watching a 3D movie, you can set up a Lens Memory position in advance and save yourself some time."

- Higher brightnes in dynamic mode.
- lens memory - auto switch between aspect rat... oh, you own RS45, you know what it is.
- More comfortable 3D glasses.

yea i'm in the same boat.. sucks to wait.. this will be my first pj, got everything set up just waiting to pull the trigger. need to dust off my copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance until the reviews of both come in.

Lens Memory works...but Auto Detect doesn't (unless I'm doing something wrong). Auto Detect is working fine in 2D mode...and the option is grayed out in 3D mode. Need to manually select a lens memory.

No. The two glasses are via main-in rebate.

Very interested to hear about the sharpness and how clean the 3D is on this projector.

Folks already have 3D glasses to watch the content? I have yet to send in the mail-in for the glasses. If you did receive them, are they comfortable and the medium size as others have indicated? This is my first projector and I have yet to acquire 3D glasses for it. Any links to good prices for the glasses for this projector?

Re: Glasses...I bought all three sizes from Projector People when I purchased my 8000U. Last night I only tried the Mediums and they worked well even over my glasses. I want to try them tonight with my contacts in. I bought some smalls for my kids and one large to try it. I'll try and report back here regarding the sizing (I tried to do research on this before I bought the projector but found conflicting info).

As I mentioned above, only had about 30 minutes to tinker last night...hoping to get more time tonight. Will make sure to fire up the PS3 and try some gaming...both in 2D and 3D. I loved gaming on my 4000U and hope the experience will be even better.

IQ22 Thanks for the comparison Pics....As a follow up, wanted to know what Projector Mount Bracket you used?

I have seen similiar brackets on Monoprice and was thinking this will be the bracket I buy. Looks like yours hangs down in order to avoid having to adjust the projector as much AKA Lens Shift to cast your image on your screen.

Would love to know how long that bracket is.

No complaints with it. It has a ton of adjust-ability. It was a cinch to take down the 4000 and put up the 8000 even with the completely different mounting pattern.

Unfortunately no. I spent time last night tweaking settings on it and setting up a new wireless router (old one had crappy range, etc.).

I still have a basement full of drywall chunks, dust, etc., yet plan to have it cleaned up this weekend and pristine to play some games. I also do not have my speakers and receiver set back up at this point, which I'm in the process of doing. Life/work keeps getting in my way.

Definitely going to be gaming and reporting findings.

Can someone please explain what the AUTO Lens memory function does? In other words, it automatically changes the lens settings BASED ON WHAT parameters? Based on input? Based on content? or?

hey IQ22! can you maybe show pics of the differences in pic quality between the 4000 and 8000? my cousin has the 4000 and I see it all the time..would give me a good reference of the difference between the 2 and may help decide which pj I wanna go with? If not maybe you could describe the differences in detail?

It's based on content.

For example, using a 2.35 screen:
You set up a screen size for 16:9 such that the image takes up the entire height of the screen with black bars on the side.
You set up a screen size for 2.35 such that the image takes up the entire height AND width of the screen. To do this, you need to zoom out and refocus the lens.

When playing a disc, if it is in 16:9, you get the image with the bars on the side. When the aspect ratio changes to 2.35, the projector automatically zooms out and refocuses so that the image takes up the entire screen. And vice versa, from 2.35, it zooms and refocuses to 16:9.

Now, if I could only find a way to stop it from displaying "PROCESSING" while it's doing it.

I only wish projector panels had the ability to completely mask 'unused' pixels. Either turn them off altogether, or mask them physically... anyway, I know why that is near impossible to do under current LCD/DLP technology on PJs , with the lightpaths and all... but still, one can dream.

GAMING on the AE8000

I replaced my epson 5010 with the panasonic AE8000 so that is the only comparison I have. I don't have the equipment to measure the lag but I can give my initial impressions after a couple of hours playing halo reach in game mode. First, it is significantly better than the 5010 which I would say was unplayable. The 8000 was playable, however, the lag on the 8000 was still noticeable. It was not to the point where I didn't enjoy playing the game anymore or to the point of wanting to throw the controller across the room. Also, I felt like I started to get used to it after a while and subconsciously correct for it (I also lowered the controller sensitivity which helped). I played campaign for a bit and while it was a little harder to get a head shot, I still managed fine with the 8000 (head shots were close to impossible on the 5010). Next I played some multiplayer and things went better than I thought they would. First, I would describe myself as a casual player with decent skills (1.05 kill death ratio) and I generally come out of a match with positive kills. I also will use this projector 40% for gaming and 60% for movies. In my time playing multiplayer on the 8000, I stayed positive for the most part but there were a couple of one on one battles each match that I lost that I felt like I would have normally won. Overall, I love the 8000 for the great 2D/3D and pretty good gaming (for a projector). If you are a hardcore gamer and only care about gaming on a projector, I would keep looking.
