Ok, I'm planning to buy a 3DTV in a near future and i've started looking at the forum but I'm more mix up than before

To start thing, I will be looking to my TV at a 15 feet distance and I'm planning to pay around 2 000$ for it, but i'm still open to pay more.
I'd like to know the difference between active and passive 3DTV, keep in mind I will be looking to 2d stuff also since there is not that much stuff in 3D.
And also the brand, is there better brand in active or passive 3DTV.
And if I go to a merchant, have you some advice on what to be aware of or a good merchant location in Montreal or near.
I know it's up to everyone opinion but i'm not sure that i can rely on guy who are selling the TV since I don't know that much.
