Laptop running Windows Vista

Hi folks.

I've been using my notebook connected via HDMI to my HDTV for some time now. I use it to play movies onto my TV.

Recently I've tried to connect my fathers laptop to his TV so he could do the same.

However he's running Windows Vista while I'm on Windows 7 (Not sure that makes a big difference)

I've encountered some issues along the way.

He has a Samsung 5 series Plasma 3D TV.

When I connect his laptop to his TV and select "show desktop on external display only" I can only see about a centimeter of the laptop desktop at the top of his TV screen.
I'm not sure how to get it working...When I connect my notebook to his TV it works fine. Some of my desktop screen is cut off, but It's not a big deal as it does not affect any movies as far as I can see.

His laptop does a native display of 1280x800 and the TV does 1920x1080 when I connect it via HDMI.
Also wondering how to exit out of "show desktop on external display only" other than unplugging the HDMI cable. Is there a hotkey I can press on the laptop? I know for Win7 you press windows + P but that does not seem to work on Vista. How do I adjust these settings again? I know that there is "Duplicate" "Extended" and "Show Desktop on external display only" but I do not know where to find them as every time I connect the laptop via HDMI it automatically goes with the first setting I picked - E.G. Show Desktop.

Would greatly appreciate some help here as I'm trying to do something nice for my dad and It kinda backfired!

Can't help you with the first part, but every laptop I have ever owned has had a function key that allowed you to toggle among the laptop screen, external screen or both. Look for a symbol that looks like two overlapping monitors.
