How are you guys storing your media?

With that number why no go for a Sony mega changer, or better still, download it all onto a media server? It is hard to organize and keep track of that many physical discs.

HTPC for daily viewing. Original discs in boxes.

Why not buy plastic sleeves and recycle the DVD boxes?

Depends on how you rip them. You could rip them all to full .iso files and just mount them with something from SlySoft and never lose quality if your HTPC is up to the task. Have to warn you, though, the blu-ray .iso files run upwards of 40GB each. Some have had good luck ripping them to AVCHD files.

Storage shelf. I was tempted to purchase the slim dvd cases but it would be a waste of money for new artwork, etc.

Rip videos and store on 13 TB Unraid server and stream using a WD media player.

I use Ikea Benno media towers next to their Billy shelves. Benno and Billy are designed to match and are the same height and come int he same colors, which is great for customizing an array or split array of shallow media towers for Blu-rays and CDs and deeper shelves for collectibles, books, box sets, etc. Plus, they are relatively affordable and the Billy shelves can be outfitted with a variety of shelves, doors, and lighting.

I all ways thought this was cool but herd it was expensive.

What is the htpc you guys talk about I how do you go about putting your disc as a .iso what the heck is that. laymans terms please.

HTPC is a home theatre computer. Basically, you use a program to copy all of your media (DVD/Blu Ray) to hard drive. This requires hundreds, if not thousands of hours and LOTS of storage space. Figure a DVD ISO (image of the full disc with menus, features, etc) is anywhere from 4 to 9 GB and a blu ray can be up to 50 GB. Then, you would use a program like XBMC to organize all of the media and play it.

I'm actually picking up some of these today and will let you know what I think of it. In case you are still looking for "low-tech" alternatives to storing
so many blu's. Right now it is on sale at Target for only $14, I was originally looking at the Prepac double and triple floating wall storage units
but they cost a bit and are bulky. Not to mention they are roughly 8.25" deep whereas this is only 6" deep. The other thing with the Prepac's is that
like 1 or 2 of your discs on each shelf would be hidden. For less than 50% of the cost I can get the equivalent storage space of the triple for about $60.
Based on my estimation they should be able to hold close to 100 blu's each.

I'm old school, and like my physical media. I still miss my LP collection.

I use a Leslie Dame media cabinet - adjustable shelves, doors - actually a fairly attractive piece of furniture and surprisingly well made. I bought the mission style - it's available all over the web in various sizes/capacities. You have to assemble it but it was pretty easy. My wife even likes it. I went with the cherry finish.

I use an old dresser that was once in the nursery, repainted to fit with the coloring, and I put inside racks that are meant for stacking pans - works great to divide media by genre.

12tb HTPC for me. As far as physical discs, I have just crossed over the 500ish mark. I have a CX7000-ES (400 disc blu ray changer, loaded) along with two 200 disc firewire DVD changers running with My Movies. I'm SMACKING myself for NOT buying another 400 disc changer when I had the chance! Now the price has gone CRAZY on them (they have since been discontinued). I paid $700 for mine about a year and 1/2 ago. Now, $1400 for a USED machine is a decent deal!!! I could use about 2 more of them.

I have about 600 DvD and about 100Blu-rays , i tossed out all the boxes and kept just the discs.
... I store my DVD's in black Discgears and BluRays in BLUE discgears.

It takes up just one self on an ikea bookself

i catalog it all using the Iphone app MY MOVIES FOR IPHONE PRO , i simply use the bar code scan the disc , it loads to the app, i save it under the Discgear # i have it set for , the number of 1-100 that its in , the app has Previews and all sorts of cool features , takes me less then a minute to locate my movie and put it in the PS3
