7.1 Surround setup questions about placement.

I originally posted this in the wrong place I think. I spotted this forum after I posted. I am getting my home theater finally setup. I am currently rewiring the room for power and relocating speaker wires. My question is from the picture below, can I successfully have 7.1 surround? I have in-ceiling speakers and I am going to use them until I can afford to upgrade at a later date. The rears (if you can make them out in the photo among the recessed lights) are directly over the seating. If I have about 6' of ceiling space behind them in the corners is that enough for the SBL and SBR? Anyone suggest any other options? Thanks again guys!!

Surround sound is intended to come from around you, not from above. If you're going to use in-ceiling speakers, then spread them (symmetrically) as far away from from the listening area as possible. For the side speakers that means spreading them as close to the side walls as you can. Angle-wise, keep them in-line with the seating area or slightly forward. Place the rear speakers as close to the rear wall as you can, spread at least 60 degrees apart. This will give the impression of your surround speakers being high up on the rear and side walls rather than overhead, giving you better wrap-around envelopment and clear rear-vs-side separation in the surround field.
