Plz help me so that I DON'T end up purchasing BOSE

Folks,

I know this has been asked numerous times before. I have searched and read through most of the threads but the reason I am still posting and asking is to get the most up to date information and suggestions. Some of the threads were a couple years old. So, below are the room dimensions and the TV location. . My BIGGEST issue is the ceiling. It is approximately 18ft at least, if not higher. I would obviously like something that will fill up the space and sound decent as well. The Title referencing BOSE is obviously a joke.smile.gif

Yes, I am on a relatively limited budget (approx $1000) and would like to get the best bang for the buck as far as speakers go. I would like to stay away from a sub right now, for obvious limited budgetary reasons.

Can I put together a 5.1 system in this budget?
Oh and the TV is 80 inches and mounted on the wall. System will be used for anything and everything (TV, Movies etc)

Appreciate the advice.

Edit: I am currently looking at the Denon 1712 but feel free to suggest alternatives.

5 nht super zeros- $500

A $500 sub of your choice- Go to the sub forum to get suggestions. That's about the best you're going to do unless you find some killer deals on Infinity speakers.

fwiw, you can get a great bargin on a pair of boston acoustics a360,s at accessories4less ( only one set so you must hurry ),if you can live with white gloss finish ( imo they look great with the black grilles) and one of the towers has a dent on on corner other than that for$299 these are some great sounding speakers they orig. retailed for $800 ea. add the a225c center channel( $99) and a pair of a25 bookshelves for rear($160)then a premier acoustics pa-150 sub at acoustic sound design for $425 can get cheaper on website if you make a deal ...total aprox. $985 for a great sounding system imo

Not bad. Now, would they be able to fill up the space without any issue?

also, looking at some of the older threads, somebody suggested Pioneer FS51s. Is that still a valid recommendation if I put together that system (minus the sub)?

fwiw, if you sign up to neweggs website they will let you know when the pioneer fs51( and the other pioneer speakers) go on sale again for $129 for the pair (usually once a month)this is a great bargin too.you could put a pioneer 5.0 system together for aprox. $230 which will give enough for a great sub from hsu or outlaw just a suggestion

Not one that will fill that space at high levels. I'd start with the receiver and L/R mains, preferably high sensitivity like Chase Home Theater. Add the rest later on when finances permit, IMO a better option than getting something now that you'll want to replace later.

Well if you're not getting a sub right now then you'll only have a 5.0 system not 5.1.

Do you need a receiver or you already have one?

So this $1000 budget is for 5 speakers, no subwoofer or receiver?

Wanna be clear before making any recommendations.

Polk audio monitor 70's and a CS2 center. $450 from new egg when the sales come back up. Then get a bstock sub from hsuresearch. At least a 2.3 or .4. Then buy your surrounds when the budget allows.

The Jamo S506 system is available for around $500.

Put that together with the Klipsch RW12D subwoofer, which is $300-400, and you will have a very nice 5.1 system.

Yes, that budget includes the receiver (don't have one currently). Now, I am obviously open to ideas if spending another 100-200 makes a HUGE difference in the over all system.

somebody just suggested the onkyo HT-S9400THX... Last I checked, Onkyo wasnt the best speaker maker out there. Have things changed?

Nothing's changed. You'll get about as many recommendations as there are posters, most of them based on "I like mine". Of course they do, otherwise they'd be asking what new speakers they should be buying.

cant do floor standing speakers due to kids. Must be wall mountable. I have heard nothing but great things about HSU subs.

Then you're not going to get anything capable of high output in your price range that will have any sort of output.

??? There's no advantage to a floor stander versus wall mounted when subs are in play.
As for HSU subs, they're pretty average. The limiting factors for subwoofer output are driver displacement and cabinet size. Since HSU subs are average in those respects so are the results. The same applies to mains, for that matter. My recommendation for Chase is based on that and their high sensitivity, along with a very reasonable price.

I second what Bill is saying.

For $479 per pair, you can get the Monitor Audio Bronze BX-2 speakers and then for $299 the Bronze BX Center speaker; they will fill your space with good quality sound, and that is less than $800.

For around $250 you can get the Denon 1612 receiver, and you will be in business for right around $1000.

When you have the money, you can add a pair of Bronze BX-1 speakers and then a subwoofer.

I like the high sensitivity of those Chase speakers but how come even with a 10" woofer they only go down 72hz? confused.gif

Because they're not supposed to. They're intended to be used with subs. And since they don't go low they go louder than other speakers that do go lower. If you're running a sub to handle below 80Hz there's nothing to be gained using mains that go lower than 72Hz, and much to be lost, that being sensitivity.

Okay, but since he will be holding off on a sub for a while, it doesn't seem like a good idea for him to get the Chase speakers.

If he was able to buy a sub right away, then the Chase speakers would be a very good recommendation if he only wants two speakers for now.

Well, I wouldn't place the SHO-10's in the wall mount category. I've seen it done, they just seem rather large for putting up on the wall.

In 1979 I stumbled onto the Klipsch brand and heading to college, bought a pair of LaScalas. I don't remember their cost but we'll say $1,500.

I still have them today, more than 30 years later so that's $45/year. I have never understood the logic of buying something today, specifically shortchanging your goal KNOWING that you're going to upgrade later. I think that's just throwing money away.

Buy the right thing first, do it once and be done, even if you have to go in stages.

wow that's a large room with 18ft ceiling,I recommend a high sensitivity speaker with a compression horn tweeter.

As opposed to putting them on the floor where the high frequencies can't be heard? As for their size, if you want high sensitivity you'll only get it from a large cab. In the OP's case high sensitivity speakers seem a more viable alternative than dropping the ceiling eight feet.
