MPC-HC: Native 3D for older DLP Projectors

I'm not sure where to post this... It really just applies to older DLP HDTVs that support the DLP 3-D Image format. But I didn't find a forum dedicated to DLP HDTVs.

I've been wanting this for ages, so I finally just broke down and did it...

I modified a recent pull of the source code to MPC-HC to display SBS 3D movies on my Mitsubishi WD-73833 DLP HDTV. The modification is a small source code change, and two DX9 Post-Resize Pixel Shader scripts (one for right side first, the other for left side first).

I put a post on Doom9's MPC-HC forums, to see if it is something they might want to integrate into the release version of MPC-HC. If it is something that anyone here might want integrated into MPC-HC, it might help to put a post in the MPC-HC forums, letting them know.

Here is a link to my Doom9 MPC-HC forum post...

Hi

I do not have a DLP TV, but I use MPC HC as my main video viewer. I down know much about programming so It's good to see someone who can do some code being enthusiastic about adding stereo 3D features to MPC HC.
It would be great if you could extend your patches to make MPC HC fully 3D aware, even if you don't implement every single 3D display or 3D file format out there, If you've got a good enough basis, it would be easier for other people later to add support for new file formats like BluRay 3D's MVC when an MVC decoder will be available or specific displays like Nvidia 3D Vision, AMD HD3D, or exotic head mounted displays.
I'd love to see a flexible basis in which MPC HC could :
-understand when a file is a 3D movie (for example using file name conventions or by identifying stereosopic 3D tags in mkv files
-identify and isolate the left and right eye views for various arrangements (side by side, top bottom, interlaced with or without swapped eyes), or different file formats (2 video streams in one file, or 2 video files with a view in each : myvideo_LEFT.avi + myvideo_RIGHT.avi)
-do whatever processing MPC HC usually does on both eye views of the video ("play the video")
-and finally have an output module in which you can choose various types of 3D outputs (anaglyph, DLP checkerboard, side by side squashed or full ratio, or even simple 2D viewing)

And then there's subtitle management...

At the moment, my display is side by side at full ratio (3840x1080), in order to use it I often have to play with the resize filters, and I use FFDshow's avisynth script module to manipulate the picture when the storage format needs to be converted (either top bottom or sometimes an eye swap), as well as FFDshow's little stereoscopic subtitle mode which transforms subtitles into side by side.
It all kind of works but requires lots of manual work to enable the right options for the right movie, and stuff sometimes breaks apart with software updates.
Having it properly integrated in MPC HC would definitely make watching 3D video a much better experience.

The newer DLPs support 3D as well.

I assumed since most of the newer DLP TVs natively support SBS and TAB formats, their owners wouldn't have much use for a version of MPC-HC that plays SBS and TAB movie files in DLP checkerboard format.

I thought about posting it there, but this seemed like a better fit. That topic didn't include the DLP front projectors, it does includes the LCD and older CRT projectors, and it wasn't specific to 3D.

I was sort of surprised to find that there wasn't a generic DLP projectors topic. DLP projectors have a uniquely different set of properties than most of the other HDTVs.

I'm sorry, you didn't mention front projectors. There's a forum for those as well. There were/are so many brands, types and models, I guess they just lumped them together under front and rear projection, wherein one can search for one's brand and model. Good luck with your project.
