Good screen for lights on viewing with a short throw distance

I had a similar thread looking for which projectors have the most zoom, but it looks like it has really turned into more of a discussion on screens.

Assuming I go with the Epson 6010 ceiling mounted and will be using a throw ratio of roughly 1.35 distance to screen width any screens I should be looking at that let me:

Leave overhead can lights on partially dimmed to watch football.
Eliminate the reflection from the screen back onto the ceiling & surrounding walls (I had a Carada BW in my last setup and even with a completely black screen wall and black ceiling it would light up the gray walls at the front of the room)

I had been thinking BD II 1.4 gain, but understand it might not be the best due to the short throw ratio. I'm open to suggestions. Probably about a $3K cap on budget for a 106" screen.


I should stipulate I did like the Carada last time and wouldn't be opposed to it, if it is best, but also wouldn't mind spending more to accomplish the stated goals above.

I think the DNP 08-85 would be your best choice. Handles overhead lighting like a champion, has no issues with hotspotting, and your Epson 6010 should have no problem lighting it up with its high lumens.

This is a good suggestion. The Epson 5010 and 6010 would work well with a 106" diagonal DNP 08-85 screen. The 5010/6010 can also throw the 106" image from your needed distance. Now my only question is why the 6010 over the 5010, since you are talking a 16:9 screen. If you would like to discuss this more in depth, shoot us an email.

The max angle that you do not want to exceed is 31 degrees. So if the angle from the lens to the bottom of the screen does not exceed this angle you are okay. Generally as long as you are not more than 12" above the screen you should be fine.

I have a Epson 5010 but haven't decided on a screen yet. It's currently ceiling mounted 12ft from the wall and I want a 100" screen. This is in a game room where lights will be on for sports. There is also some light from windows.

Previously I had a 65" plasma and didn't consider a projector until I saw the BD screen's ability to reject ambient light.

Black diamond can support up to a 1.2 throw ratio. Optimum is 2.0.

Keep in mind that Black Diamond is the only ambient light rejecting screen that rejects light in the vertical and horizontal plain. This means Bd handles lights from above and the side like wall fixtures, table lamps, windows and light reflected off the wall.

The DNP has a minimum throw ratio of 1.5. Black Diamond is 1.2. Seems to me the BD would be better than DNP for shorter throw.

I decided on a BD 1.4 gain 100" screen for my game room. Moved my Epson 5010 projector to 13.5' which is a throw ratio of 1.86. It is ceiling mounted and I'm using vertical lens shift to hit the screen. I've though about moving the projector lower from theceiling to see if I get a brighter image.

can you post some pic of you epson with your screen and is the picture bright on your epson 5010
