Pioneer vs Others

Thread Starter
I have an Onkyo TX-NR5007 that is less than 3 years old and has been on the fritz for some time. Some of the issues are well-known - loss of audio, requiring multiple resets, etc - now the thing is going haywire on video from any source every couple of minutes. It's driving me nuts!

I'm looking to replace it, and need some recommendations.

My Setup:

- 11.2 wired with wides and highs, (the Onkyo only fires 9.2 at a time)
- Multiple HDMI and various sources and outputting HDMI to LED TV.
- My room is irregular and speaker layout inflexible.

So, I need a current replacement that can wire for 11.2, won't die in three years, is network ready (hardwired is fine), and will knock my socks off for movies, games, and music (all kinds, digital, radio, and even records). It should have at least as many inputs as I have now. I was considering the SC-68, but I see on this forum that it doesn't do sub-eq and that that is apparently a major failing - and that it doesn't allow you to change crossover points for the other speakers (I think). I don't know if my failed Onkyo with Audyssey did sub-eq or not. Come to think of it, I've had several issues with one or the other sub not firing or firing with terrible, poor quality noise out of the blue (thought that might have been a defect in one of the subs, but now I'm not so sure).

Please recommend specific receivers to consider and any insights/considerations I should have in mind.

Thanks from New York

Denon 4311 or wait and see what the new models have to offer.
SC-68 or 67 if xt32 does not matter.

Onkyo xx09/xx10 series or perhaps the upcoming denon or 4520.

butter and jelly please.

If considering the xx10 series Onkyos, be sure to check out the back panel connections as many have been eliminated. May not affect you though.

Very little info yet on the new Denon 4520 coming in 2 months maybe. Have high hopes for it.

The new Elite SC-68 is a nice unit and there is an Official thread started. Steve who started it is very detailed with his info and is talking quite a bit about the room correction features. The SC-68 has been the best so far in new units for keeping connections that I know of.

The Pioneer models use filters for the sub which is different that Audyssey but it does a great job with the sub. The room correction is outstanding. With that many speakers, a signal xo may serve you better. I have had a couple of Denons and perfer the Pioneer which is just a matter of preference.

Pioneer does not EQ the sub(s). Their room correction system (MCACC) does allow more user adjustments (without the Pro add-on) and the class-D amps in the upper-end models are more efficient than typical class-AB amps. For more advanced room correction and 11.2 I would look to Denon.

Keeping all of that in mind, unless the OP's really concerned about 4K passthrough/upscaling in the future, more esoteric features like HDMI multi-zone capability or AL32 upscaling of audio, or built-in network switching (all have been mentioned as tentative features on the Denon 2013 speculation thread), I'd save myself the money and pick up the 4311. It's a stable product and can be purchased for several hundred dollars less than the 4520 will go for. There's also a big community of 4311 users on AVS that have put the receiver through its paces as well, so you'll be better able to 'plug and play'.

You can also roll the savings into buying the Audyssey Pro Kit, which will extend the capabilities of XT32 that are offered in the 4311 for more measuring positions, more options for independent crossovers by Audyssey, and tweaking of the final results for your specific room.

And you won't have to worry about dropping S-Video analog support either, along with the more typical component and RCA analog inputs....

^^^ Agreed. I am still cogitating about getting a 4311 myself; have to deal with a few other things that came up first. frown.gif I do not see any features that would compel me to get a 4520 (or whatever) over the 4311.

Sounds as if the OP wishes to to use another Onkyo product?? Which is fine, totaly understand. I would reccomend the Dennon 4311 as well as IMHO it would be the match to the 5009.

Heres a deal on a referb if needed ?

If you wait long enough, you might find a couple of bleeding-edge Denon fanboys that just _have_ to have one of those features and want to sell their vaunted 4311 or A100 (the anniversary special edition of the 4311). You might have to get your own Pro Kit, though.

I'm not talking about myself, of course, but I'm sure you can think of at least one that might part with his "feet" LOL......

I have a 4311 in a 11.2 setup and it's great. I don't care about 4k video or any video processing. Let the TV handle it. I haven't had time to figure out half of what it's capable of.

I would get the 4311, 4520 or the onkyo 3010/5010. Although you're probably turned off by Onkyo. I've had similar Onkyo failure in the past and avoid them unless they're way less expensive than the competition at a particular feature set. Only the 4311 is currently available. The others will likely be in a month or 2.

Keep in mind that if you want to run 11.2, you'll need an external amp to power the last 2 (or more) with any receiver you choose.
