I just want something that can provide quality, digital surround sound for my dad's old speaker set. Is a refurbed Denon AVR-891 a good choice?

You can step down for a model with about the same power, less features and less money like the 591. I have a hard time spending over $300 for a refurb, but you are looking at quite a good number of features for this price. I'm even considering the 2311CI refurbed for $350, just to check out HD radio.

What devices will be connected the receiver? and what speakers does your dad own?

He's got HD cable and a blue-ray player, and he'd like to use some old speakers (which I think might be pretty good) in order to set up surround sound. We really have no idea what we're doing though.

What we have so far is a bundle of speakers bought in the mid-late 1980s:

Klipsch RW10 powered subwoofer
Pair of Klipsch Forte type FOR WO RV (giant floor standing speakers)
Pair of Mitsubishi speakers model DS-32BMKII (formerly used as rears)

Do you think this setup would tie together well with the Denon AVR-891?

Yes, it should be fine. He could even step down to the prevous year's 890/2310 if he wanted.

The 891 adds 3D compatibility with a higher version 1.4 HDMI and a front USB port.
