Does updating firmware affect TV calibration

Sharp LED/LCD panel that was professionally calibrated. Updated firmware was released for a couple of minor issues. Not sure if it's my imagination but the picture looks different post-update. Is it possible for a firmware update to have an effect or mess up the calibration?

Sure it could, the firmware is the software the make the TV work.. Check the setting compared to what the pro left and see if anything changed.. even if it did not change any settings could have changed the image since it is what makes everything work.. Or it could be your imagination..

Settings are the same as left during calibration, so hard to say if anything has anything changed.

usually it's a good idea to ask your calibrator before applying any updates... they should be able to answer that question for you

sometimes it can significantly alter your professional calibration, sometimes it won't... without a meter and software, you may not be able to tell exactly what changed and how, assuming something did change

99% of firmware updates DO NOT affect calibration. There is always some misguided manufacturer who flubs this and resets everything back to defaults, but, in general, the location the calibration data is stored is completely separate and protected from the area where firmware resides (and is uploaded to).

So 99% of the time you do an update, if you think you're seeing something different, you aren't.

Depending on how new your model is and whether it has had previous firmware updates or not.... your calibrator will not necessarily know if updating the firmware will wipe out the calibration. TVs that have more frequent updates and that are more popular among people who have calibrations performed (Panasonic and Samsung seem to be the front runners for flat panel calibration by a fair margin over other brands) will be more likely to have been closely scrutinized (and perhaps measured) before and after a firmware update. Less-often calibrated brands (Sharp, LG, Toshiba, etc.) are less likely to be "caught" wiping out calibration settings after firmware updates just because fewer people/owners, are looking for that problem.

that would make certain updates on the VT50 part of the '1%'

Hi All,

I have now calibrated 4 VT50s with the new Software Update that enables the Luminance controls in the CMS. While the settings do not change the luminance of the colors changes dramatically making it necessary to use the Luminance controls where before it was not necessary. I am going to recalibrate a client's VT50 that I did the ISF ccc on in a week or so and will report back the results. I can say he has told me he sees a big change and not for the better.

The Samsungs last year reset everything to factory with their periodic FW updates. I would assume the worst when it comes to these updates. It is unbelievable to me that manufacturers can't get this done without ruining a calibrated TV.

Kevin

Has that recalibration occurred?

If so, what were the results?
