Home Speaker System Pre-Wire Quote

Hi everyone,

I am currently having a house built and was given a quote for speaker pre-wiring from our low-voltage wiring company. It is as follows:

FAMILY ROOM (SOURCE A LOCATION – ZONE 1)
1 - PRE-WIRE FOR (4) IN-CEILING SURROUND SPEAKERS WIRED BACK TO $ INCLUDED
TV/SOURCE LOCATION ABOVE FIREPLACE
1 - PRE-WIRE FOR IN-CEILING CENTER CHANNEL SPEAKER & 4-CON AUDIO $ 100.00
FEED TO BASEMENT FOR KITCHEN & PATIO VOLUME CONTROL FEEDS
1 - SUBWOOFER WALL PLATE LOCATED NEAR ELECTRIC OUTLET WIRED $ 80.00
BACK TO TV/SOURCE LOCATION ABOVE FIREPLACE

KITCHEN (SOURCE A – ZONE 2)
1 - PRE-WIRE FOR (2) IN-CEILING STEREO SPEAKERS & VOLUME CONTROL $ 110.00

PATIO (SOURCE A – ZONE 2)
1 - PRE-WIRE FOR (2) OUTDOOR SURFACE MOUNT STEREO SPEAKERS & $ 110.00
VOLUME CONTROL

FUTURE VOLUME CONTROL LOCATIONS WILL HAVE A SINGLE GANG BLANK COVER PLATE.

TOTAL FOR DISTRIBUTED AUDIO PRE-WIRE $ 400.00

They use 16/2 speaker cable as their standard and I can upgrade to 14/2 ect.

Is this a reasonable price? What do you think about the speaker wire? This will all run to a common source in the basement....is this standard?

Last question- is it hard to install ceiling speakers as well as wall volume control by myself later down the road?

Thanks for your help!

I'm curious who designed this and defined the setup? Sounds insufficient to me, I'd like more prewiring of ethernet, hdmi etc to go along with the speaker wiring, and probably for more speakers not so much central control as room/zone control thinking ahead somewhat....rather than what sounds like background music setups more than anything (ceiling speakers-yuk).

I would wire for in-wall LCR speakers in the main room; in-ceiling should be avoided there.

I would use 16 gauge wire but I'm in the minority.

You should consider a category cable to each VC location, for future proofing. You may want to take a look at eye-level keypads, fed by the category cable, instead of simple VCs. KPs provide metadata and complete control of the music and allow different music in each room.
