Hi Guys,

Finally was able to purchase my first projector !!, I have purchased myself an Epson 8350.

I just needed a little bit of advice, I didn't really take this into consideration when buying the projector as it kind of just slipped my mind, however I basically want to dedicate the projector to just films, so I would like to get myself a screen aspect of 2.35:1.

I was wondering what you guys do about the black bars when viewing 2.35 material.

if I was to make up a screen with a ratio of 2.35:1 the upper and lower black bars would project outside of the screen ?
is this something your supposed to calibrate out, or can you remove them at all ??

Congrats on the projector! Regarding 2.35, you have two options: you can zoom out until the picture takes up the whole screen; as you noted, the black bars will project off the screen, although if you have your screen framed with some light absorbing fabric, that shouldn't be noticeable. This is going to be the cheap method. The other option is to buy or make your own anamorphic lens.

I wonder what people with CIH setups do with imax film transfers that have variable aspect ratios. For those (very few movies) when the aspect ratio goes from the cinemascope to imax a large section of the image would go off screen. If you try to fit the imax portion to the screen, you'd have black bars left and right during the imax parts and black bars all the way around for cinemascope.
