$12 5.1 Lynyrd Skynyrd DVD-Audio Wally World Exclusive

Get yourselves over to Walmart of all places for a new triple disc Lynyrd Skynyrd compilation for $12. Elliot Scheiner remixed ten classic Lynyrd Skynyrd tracks for a new Walmart exclusive “Southern Surroundings” http://www.walmart.com/ip/21289895

Disc one is a another CD of the usual hits. My old CDs will sound better.
DVD #1 is a video disc A live 35 minute 1975 television studio concert from the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test. Very good stuff with lossless PCM stereo sound!
DVD #2 is a DVD-Audio disc with lossless DVD-Audio and lossy DTS 5.1 remixes of ten classic Skynyrd tracks;

Saturday Night Special
Gimme Three Steps
Swamp Music
Gimme Back My Bullets
Ballad Of Curtis Lowe
You Got That Right
That Smell
All I Can Do Is Write About It
Simple Man
Free Bird

$12 eek.gif

I'm so used to getting jacked buying surround sound I'll have to buy a bag of jerky or something so I don't feel guilty!

Thanks to classic rock stations I probably still can't listen to Free Bird again, even if it is in 5.1!

Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks to this posting I was able to order a copy of this on line about 30 minutes ago. I called to tell my friend about it and when he went to order it a few minutes ago it already shows it is no longer available to order. Quickest out of print DVD-A I ever bought.
I would check again for online orders. It was out of stock yesterday, then available this morning (got my order in!!), now evidently out of stock again.

I tried my local walmart after the first time it was unavailable online and the store didn't have it in stock, but I know some people that have found it at other stores.

To anyone in the east bay area that is looking, the Dublin/Pleasanton Walmart has one as of this Saturday afternoon (they had two before I got there!). I had checked this store and two of the ones in the south bay last Tues/Wed without success, so if you looked last week and didn't find any its worth trying again.

Having listened to this surround mix now several times, I must say that the surround mix on this DVD-A is spectacular. Well worth seeking out.

Cherylandmike - Thanks for this tip! I picked up a copy today at the Walmart in North Denver and agree the sound and 5.1 mix are very good.

When was the last time a good rock DVD-Audio disc came out? Isn't this kinda' momentous?

well it appears to be sold out online.. What are the chances a local Walmart has this??
I picked this up in Frankfort KY. It was the only copy they had. I got my driver’s license in 1977 and growing up in rural Illinois, we didn’t know from The Ramones or the Sex Pistols, Southern Rock was about as punk as we got. The DVD-A sounds great! A CD, DVD and DVD-A for $12? They would not market this without the expectation of profit, so I hope it sells and we see more of this kind of release, but I’m not holding my breath.

Found 2 copies tonight at a walmart I had previously visited earlier in the week so maybe they will start showing up at other stores.

Haven't listened to it yet, but I have some time alone tomorrow where I can crank up the volume.

I just found (and bought) two copies tonight. Local walmart didn't have one, one 15 miles away did. It wasn't on the "new release" rack, rather, it was buried
behind all the other old 'skynrd' cd's. Sounds good, do wish it had "Sweet Home Alabama" in 5.1- oh well....

Thanks for the tip. It was an unexpected treat. DVD-A surround and DVD-V for a very nice price, what's not to like?

Having listened to the DVD-A a couple of times now, I think the Elliot Scheiner mix is very good. From the opening notes of Saturday Night Special, you can tell this is a very discrete mix. Softer tracks like The Ballad of Curtis Loew and Simple Man are a little more sublime, but still very immersive. Having heard these songs seemingly thousands of times for the last 35+ years, they seem new and fresh. Ironically, That Smell, which is one of my favorite Skynyrd songs, might be my least favorite on the DVD-A. Something about it was distracting and it was the only track where the surround mix seemed forced, and maybe even a little too discrete. However, that's a small quibble on what is otherwise an excellent surround disc. Closing with Free Bird, and you realize it was made to be in surround, with guitars coming at you from all directions.

It's still hard to believe that the first DVD-A I've bought from a B&M store in years would be at a Walmart, and at $12 for a 3 disc set, no less. Let's hope there is more to come. Highly recommended if you can find it in stores. As I stated previously, the store I visited earlier in the week didn't have it in stock. When I went there yesterday, after checking the New Release section, I almost overlooked them, as the 2 copies were just tucked in with the rest of the Lynyrd Skynyrd CD's.
I also believe some stores are restocking as I found this yesterday at a store that had run out previously. In my case, it was not tucked in with the other discs, but still had it's own banner on a top shelf.

Picked this up this afternoon after calling my wife and asking her to look for it while grocery shopping. She got it (also picked me up the original Posiedon Adventure Bluray which happens to be a Walmart exclusive as well). Man I love it. It sounds incredible on my system. It is a legit Dvd Audio 5.1 PCM 96/24. The songs sound better than they ever have. I had no complaints and no problems at all. Like someone else mentioned before, I hope Walmart turns this into a series with classic rock bands. That would be a great idea and would sell extremely well IMO. If you are on the fence, love classic rock, and love uncompressed audio then go buy it (if you can find it) today.

What type of disc case are they using for this title?

My local store did not have it earlier this week, but it would be helpful to know if I am looking for a regular CD case, a larger DVD-A size case, or a full DVD size case.

Thanks.

I've never seen a disc that was such a PITA to get. It's constantly OOS on the web site and neither store near me has it.

Thanks to CherylandMike for the heads up and I can't believe I actually walked into a Walmart store to purchase it....My wife shops there and couldn't find it at the other location in town, so we made a special trip (I need her by my side when going because it always freaks me out to go alone) Sunday and got the only copy they had.

I agree it sounds EXCELLENT and it brought back memories of listening to those songs at a friend's trailer back in the late 70s, although I remember our singing was louder than the album. biggrin.gif

I just picked up a copy today. I wanted to let everyone know how to locate this disc-simply call your local Walmart, and ask for the electronics department. Be patient, as it will take time. When you finally get someone to answer, just ask if they will check if it is in stock. It took checking five stores, but I eventually did find one. It helps if you live in a large metropolitan area with several Walmarts, especially SuperWalmarts. I had them hold it under my name. Now I must listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd in 5.1 Yea!

Lynyrd Skynyrd will be at a local Walmart today for an autograph session and promotion of their new album Last of a Dyin' Breed. Maybe I should go and ask where all the extra copies of Southern Surroundings are being stashed.

I really appreciate the heads up on this. Stopped at the local BM store (Super Center in a town of around 25k population) on the way home from work yesterday without much hope of actually finding a copy. To my surprise they actually had a couple in stock. Sounds fantastic, bargain of the year in my opinion. They are out there.
Good luck in having an employee help you find it! I asked the idiot in electronics and he said they don't have anything like what i described. I then showed
him the picture of the disc on Walmarts website and he still didn't know! he kept saying that an outside entity stocks their CD's and he didn't know what they had. It didn't help that they have poor disc organization, random placings that only a meth head could understand.
There is a number under the disc on that website that might help you learn if the store even has it.
Last i checked, all the $30 priced copies on amazon disappeared, leaving one $50 left.

Too damn funny.

As of yesterday, I gave up looking locally and had my brother look in his local WM in Massachusetts. Lo and behold they had a copy, so he bought it and shipped it to me.

Of course, as soon as he does that, they go back in stock.

Thanks FLCanuck smile.gif! I just ordered it and it will be shipped to the local Wal Mart in my area. No shipping charges when doing it this way with a total of $11.88. Last time I got a DVD-A this cheap was Mark Knopfler's Sailing to Philadelphia. Too bad I didn't buy a few extra copies of the StP DVD-A as it is going for big money now.
