My surge protector quit working due to a previous surge that I was not aware of and I then had another surge that blew out my RS45 power supply. I would strongly suggest using some type of surge protection and check on a regular basis to make sure the surge protection is still working.

My HT is fully behind an UPS. Surges are one thing but with projector lamp the uninterruptable cooling is good to have too. You are watching the 3D movie with high lamp when outage hits; super hot lamp is suddenly without any cooling and with some bad luck you end up buying a new lamp which costs a lot of $$$ and is obviously back-ordered and takes a month to arrive. My 540 W / 900 VA APC Back UPS Pro costs about 50-60% of a new JVC lamp...

If I plan on running it just for my projector how big of a APC do you think I need

JVC on a high lamp takes around 230 W or so. My full theater takes around 550W, biggest draws being the JVC and Denon 5308, Blu-Rayu players, switches etc. do not consume much.

So you do not need a big UPS or huge capacity in battery; you just need to avoid instant shutdowns. My APC would run my theater @550 W for about 5 minutes which is more than enuff to shut it down safely during long outage or keep it running through a short one.

Congrats, I am sure you are going to enjoy it. Question. I notice many JVC projectors in Europe are white. Is that by choice or is it available only in white?

I chose a white one as I think it looks slightly more discrete than the black one in my installation. We can get black as well and the X75 and X95 only come in black One day I might buy a used X95 and swop my white case.

Just done a very basic set up (the lamp will no doubt settle over the first 100 hours anyway): Just gone for a User setting, 6500K, custom gamma at 2.2, Standard colour space and everything else is still at zero after a quick check with AVS HD709. There is an extra 'Black level' setting that I will have a play with later: There is a bit of light getting past my curtains as it's bright day here, so hard to tell what the setting does.

The very good news is that at these basic settings (and my Lumagen in circuit, but set to 'neutral') I can hit 94 Lux with the aperture down to -15. This gives me 12-14fL and maximum contrast (~50,000:1) due to the minimum zoom/minimum iris setting. I have to open it up to -8 for 2.35:1 content with my lens (the steps seem to give smaller increments than my HD350 did), so less contrast in this wider aperture setting.

A quick watch of the start of Casino Royale (the last disc I watched on my HD350) shows that motion is smoother even with the CMD set to 'off'. It may not be as good as the Sony, but I still appreciate the improvement (HD350 never bothered me on this score, but I can see this is better). The picture is very sharp (again a nice improvement over the HD350) and convergence looks good, though I moved the Horizontal Blue setting one click to the right as it seems a hair sharper using a white grid test pattern from the Lumagen.

I've set up a 1.85:1 lens memory for use without my lens and another for 2.35:1 with my lens in place. It takes a few seconds to adjust but in practice by the time I've moved the lens (it's on a stand) the projector will have adjusted ready for whichever aspect I'm viewing. A side bonus with my particular installation is that the image for 2.35:1 can be made slightly smaller than with my HD350, so I can reduce the masking applied in my Lumagen.

Will do some more tweaking later I expect once it gets a bit darker. Merlin and Strictly will no doubt be my son and OH's choices respectively, so I'll just sit and marvel (I hope) at the improved blacks and smoother motion. :thumbsup:

Even though the white isn't the choice color for home theater it does look nice. Do you have your projector secured to the bookshelf? That setup would scare me a little.

Thanks. It's a living room, so white seems better than my older black HD350. I'm adding some dark black velvet drop down curtains and ceiling cover at the front 3 metres of the room in the new year, so that will help the image contrast. I've done some testing and even with cheap black sheeting my ANSI contrast went up from 75:1 to 230:1 (with the old HD350) so I think it will be a good compromise once done. It's quite a long room so having light colours at the back shouldn't make much difference. In an ideal world I'd have a dedicated room which would be completely black with a black projector too.

The projector just stands on the bookcase which is solid oak, so not as precarious as it might look. I have just welded up a metal frame for a 'floating' shelf which the X35 will be going on in the new year so the bookcase can be moved elsewhere. I'd already test the frame with a heavy car trolley jack, so the X35 will be lightweight compared to that. It should be the ultimate in discrete installations once done with the electric tab tensioned screen hidden in a pelmet when not in use.

What size screen are you using?

It's a 112" wide 2.35:1 tab tensioned Beamax matt white 1.5 gain screen. For 16:9 with side bars it's about 100" diagonal.

Cool thanx, one last question, how far is your throw?

My throw is about 19-20' Hence minimum zoom when using my lens (is best for minimum pincushion anyway).

I will be around 18 feet back of my 133 inch 16:9 da lite high power screen. I plan on mounting a shelf on my back wall but not sure how I'm going to do it yet. And recommendations

Venders in Canada are giving the option between the black and white case colour (this year). I'd check to see if it's the same in the US...

I am holding off on the 3D review until I have more information. I am not seeing a major difference in 3D between the RS46 and my older RS55 in the scenes I use in the shootout.

What is a good scenes to look for crosstalk?

check out the first mini-shootout (click link) -there are a number of good scenes to use for checking crosstalk. Just realize that these are some of the most difficult scenes in 3D, and mild crosstalk in most scenes will likely be missed due to the action, 3D effect, etc.

I didn't get a chance for the lag tests, but plan on it later tonight. I had to finish re-installing the OS on the HTPC I use for the lag tests which I just finished last night.

I'll run it in A/B with the RS55 to check out the flicker. We're checking with JVC to find out more info on this firmware update that was discussion in the German forums. from what I've read, it seems to only affect the X35, not the X55 or X75.

You can use the new jvc rf transmitter xpand 104 eyeglasses?

I'm not sure if I can place a JVC RS46.
It has to go in a closed cabinet with an open front of course.
Is the airflow from front right to left, as with the Epson projectors?
Or also on the back of the unit?

Here's a dumb question, and I bet I know the answer, but will the new RF transmitter work with Bluetooth glasses (like Samsung's or Panasonic's new RF models)?

Answering my own question, and to my surprise -- yes, the Panasonic Bluetooth 3D glasses work fine with the JVC RF emitter. Likewise, the JVC glasses work great with the 2012 Panasonic plasmas.
