Handbrake Sound Problem

I'm copied some of my disks on to my HTPC drive. Handbrake defaults to Dolby Pro Logic II and that's what I copied them all in. They didn't sound as good as I thought they should and I wasn't getting any of the 5.1 options on the receiver so I was playing with settings and realized that the computer was still in stereo. I changed it to 5.1 output (It has HDMI with sound through the video card going to my receiver). When I did that, the receiver now says the input is Multich PCM 5.1 ch 48 kz which is what it should, but there is no sound from the center channel. If I play the original disk on the HTPC, it says the same thing, but I have sound on the center channel.

I took this disk and make four copies with Hankbrake, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Surround (Dolby Pro Logic), AAC 6 Channel Discrete, and AC3 Passthru. All four say the input is Multich PCM 5.1 ch 48 kz when playing. The AC3 Passthru copy has sound on the center channel. the AAC 6 Channel Discrete copy has center channel sound, but neither one of the Dolby copies have sound on the center channel.

I get the same thing from other disks, too.

Why do I not have sound on the center channel with Dolby?? confused.gif

Use ac3 pass through. That is dolby digital. Those other dolbys are transcoding the audio. Ac3 should be just like on the disc.

Also when you set windows to 5.1 your receiver will always say 5.1. Regardless if the source is actually stereo.

Also what media player is this with? Usually it's best to bitstream the audio. Meaning you want to let the receiver do the decoding not windows. Then it would say dolby digital 5.1 when you play these not pcm.

Thanks.

Evidently it was my media player. I was using VLC and get what I described above and I can't find any settings that make any difference. I DLed XBMC and the same files that didn't work right in VLC sound and work great once I change the settings in it from analog to HDMI. Now if I can just figure out how to get XBMC not to default to analog sound and with subtitles on. rolleyes.gif

Is there a better media player?
