HDCP/HDMI Negotiation problems: What to look for in a new tv?

AVS - Ever since I upgraded my receiver to a Denon 2312ci I've had major HDMI instability (flashing). The TV in question is a Sony KDL52V5100 with the latest firmware.

I've done all of the basics which include tinkering with every setting, upgrading all firmware, using HDMI switches, returning the receiver, and buying new HDMI cables, etc. Nothing worked.

Denon claims that my TV is the problem but can't offer a technical reason why. The only evidence we have that another TV works jut fine.

However, if I plug my HDMI devices directly to the TV the issue goes away. I seem to have an issue "switching' between devices with the Denon as the middle man.

Denon states that my previous Onkyo 607 worked fine because it used an older HDCP protocol.

So it looks like I'll have to purchase a new TV.

Is there a HDCP/technical spec/ or general rule of thumb that I should follow while flat screen TV shopping?

If I was you, I would buy any HDTV that supports 3D operation, which requires one of the last two revisions of the HDMI spec, either HDMI 1.4 or HDMI 1.4a. HDMI 1.4a is also called HDMI with EtherNet, but unless you want that feature, you won't care.

You are unlikely to see the HDMI revision explicitly specified on an HDTV, it's not something consumers normally care about.

^^^^^ keep in mind that the HDMI spec is for hardware only, not the cables. Any certified, High Speed HDMI cable will meet your current and future needs. Some tv mfrs do list their HDMI hardware spec do you don't necessarily have to purchase a 3D set. My tv is not 3D, and is almost 2 years old. The HDMI spec was listed as 1.4. HDMI with ethernet is a nice feature but I don't know of any hardware that takes advantage of that yet.

You can go to HDMI.org I believe and that should list the specs for 1.3b if interested. As far as cables go, the certified High Speed HDMI will work with any previous version of the hardware spec so it's probably an HDCP compatibility issue. As far as HDCP versions go, I've never seen hardware versions listed like they do for HDMI so I'm not sure how you would go about resolving that. HDCP is a real pain in the a$$ at times.

My only thought was than an HDTV which supported the latest HDMI 1.4 spec would be new enough to have an HDCP version that was also compatible. I think the older existing HDTV does not recognize the new Denon receiver as a compliant/authorized switching device capable of forwarding the HDCP code for an authorized source.

HDMI 1.4a is mostly used for PC products.
