Older display grayscale controls in service menu.

I've been into the calibration thing for awhile and have calibrated newer sets for family members. The newer sets pretty much have everything that it is needed to calibrate the unit outside of the service menu, but the older sets have these controls in the service menu. However within the service menu these values are not decimal basee but appear to be hex based (Panasonic for example). So my question is when calibrating the grayscale to we convert decimal to hex for the value?

Write down the starting values and then increase or decrease the value until it is correct just like any 2 point.. why would it matter what the numbers are? I have done a bunch of old CRTs and the values on screen are of no consequence to the outcome.

It matters if the SM interprets the values as hex. ie if a value is FF how do you increase FF by 1?

Every service menu I have worked in or read instructions on how to enter and navigate has an up and down entry on the remote to increase and decrease the values but maybe some allow direct entry of data.. . In which case use the calculator in windows, choose view, scientific and click the hex radio button. Now add or subtract ... I.E. FF + 1 = 100 FF - 1 - FE..
