I read an article sometime in the last 3 months discussing 720P signal to cable box 1080i to TV 1080P.
If done correctly there is no loss of video quality. It seems that cable boxes usually do it wrong.
Correctly: 720P to 1080P to 1080i to 1080P. Cable leaves out the 1st 1080P

Upscalling 720 to 1080 is very easy. 1/2 of 720 = 360
720 + 360 = 1080.
Simply repeat every other pixel.
