Inexpensive way to process stereo (RCA) to surround on 5.1 system that takes 3xTRS only? (Have...

Hi, guys. Browsing AVS helped me immensely in choosing and setting up an HDTV, but my current goal is mildly ridiculous and I haven't had any luck so far.

First off, I have this Logitech 5.1 system for my PC: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z-5300-5-1-Channel-Surround-Speaker/dp/B0000C20R9/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332094861&sr=8-1

It's a great choice for my bedroom, I love it, yadda yadda. What I'd like to do is have it provide surround sound for the game consoles I have in here as well, but it receives 5.1 signals through 3 TRS "headphone" jacks—it doesn't process surround sound, only inputs/outputs it. However, I do have a Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1 receiver that can process the RCA stereo signals from my game consoles, an old Pioneer VSX-D711: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/AV-Receivers/Pioneer+Receivers/VSX-D711

So, my PC goes directly to the Logitech 5.1 set. My game systems would probably go to the Pioneer for processing (unless there's a processing alternative that can output to TRS?)—from there, I'm trying to figure out the most cost- and space-effective way to play the game systems' audio.

1) The Pioneer receiver has a speaker impedance of 8–16 ohms and only two pre-outs (center and sub; which are the same TRS line on the Logitech, so not sure if they can be merged anyway). Would it be safe to connect my Logitech speakers directly? (If so, I might put the speakers on a selector, to choose from the Logitech base and the Pioneer.)

2) If that's out of the question, is there a 5.1-processing alternative that would work with TRS?

3) I do have another set of speakers to hook up to the Pioneer receiver, a good Boston set. I'll only use them as a last resort because they're rather large for the room and I don't want 10 speakers and 2 subs in here. The Logitech system is great for the space, and I'd like to use it for more than my computer.

I'm definitely on a budget, less than $50 (excluding cables) if I can help it, since I'm already sitting on two 5.1 systems and I'd like to believe that's the bulk of it. Anyone with some ideas?

Cheers!

PC's 3xTRS can go to AVR's 5.1CH in with adaptors.
AVR's speaker outputs go to Logitech's 3xTRS via speaker wire, line-level converters and adaptors.
Seems a lot of trouble for getting fake MCH.

Thanks! So it wouldn't damage anything to go from AVR speaker outs to the Logitech? And the sub and center speaker can be merged to TRS without losing any processing?

As far as it being a lot of trouble, I already have the systems, so I couldn't think of an easier way to get the games in surround. By fake multichannel did you just mean Pro Logic II processing or whatever, or is this actually only going to be stereo coming out of 5 speakers? I was hoping to get actual Dolby Digital surround off one of the game systems through the optical in.

As long as line-level converters are used there shouldn't be any danger. You can do more research by searching 'receiver to pc speaker', 'line-level converters' etc. in Google.

I said fake (as opposed to discrete) because you explicitly said 'stereo' in the thread title.

There's no merging (meaning combining channels) involved in the way I suggested.

Much appreciated. I've been researching them, yeah. Sorry if I was confusing—I did explicitly say "process" stereo (as in Pro Logic II, etc.), which is a fair bit less fake than just running a 2xRCA/3xTRS adaptor to the PC system and getting straight stereo on 5 channels... assuming the stereo source provides Dolby processing, of course.

I'm still a little fuzzy on how running 6 sets of speaker wire to 3 TRS inputs won't merge anything in the method you described (the sub and center speaker share a TRS input, but have individual speaker outputs on the receiver), but I'll work it out.

Thanks again for helping me out so quickly!

I assume from looking at the Logitech manual that the 3xTRS sockets take in 5.1CH. Each TRS connector is stereo but the two channels don't mix. The C and Sub going to one TRS is similar to FL and FR going to another, they are still separate channels. The RCA-TRS adapters should take care of the wiring inside. The tip is the L channel normally: I'm not sure whether the C or Sub goes there.

Remember the separate 'sub' out from the receiver is already line-level so no line-level converter is needed. If you need more help finding the converter and adapters or how to DIY the Audio Theory, Setup and Chat forum here is the place to search and ask.
