Serious problem in updating the Blu-ray Picture Quality Tiers; Huddler help?

Thread Starter
I'm stuck at a certain point in updating the Blu-ray Picture Quality Tiers due to the new forum platform of Huddler. I can't update it at all without seriously affecting the format and/or content. When the site switched over from the old software to the new redesign, the Tiers momentarily disappeared due to the complex BBCode used to implement its distinctive look, until someone from Huddler's support team pulled it back from the abyss at my request.

That was great, but the list is due for a massive update now and I can't edit it without losing all the formatting and links. The raw BBCode for each post used on the Tiers is autogenerated from an offsite database and then manually edited into AVSforum each time there is a change.

I've certainly tried everything I can think of, but here is what I get with three different approaches.

1. This is what happens if I strip all the formatting from the raw BBCode and post it under the BBCode editor:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1425229/picture-quality-tiers-research-and-testing/0_60#post_22319372

I would rather not have the PQ Tiers lose all its links and code. An enormous amount of time and effort by dozens of people have gone into it.

2. This is what happens if I post the same raw BBCode in the RichText Editor:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1425229/picture-quality-tiers-research-and-testing/0_60#post_22319380

Obvious mess where we get the links back but the format is so awful that it's useless.

3. This is what happens if I post the raw BBCode under the BBCode editor:

The post does not show up, but the data is clearly on AVSforum as I can go in and see it when I go to edit it. This is what happened when the forum switched software platforms and someone from Huddler was able to completely recover it, fully keeping the links and proper formatting. I simply have no idea how they did it or how to duplicate the feat.

I'll flag this for the Huddler folks to look into again.

Thanks

Yes, and it was brought to their attention when we were in the testing phase as we actually pointed out the picture thread.

TEST: This may or may not help?

WITH RICH TEXT EDITOR (RTE) SELECTED IN MY PROFILE, I copied WYSIWG text from SuprSlow post (Quoted so RTE converted the BBCode) and pasted it in a different RTE WYSIWYG edit window (truncated due to timeout errors w/full post).

Checked Source window after pasting and Previewing, and all tags were in proper Rich Text (html) format.
Re-edit capability tested many times in both the WYSIWYG window and the Source window.
For me, req'd long time to open to WYSIWYG window, typing, scrolling, etc. but delay in Submitting caused timeouts (maybe a server problem?).
If delays persist, this might work better if broken into separate posts to lessen the "delays" I ran into with the existing  long posts, or there is something other that can be done to speed things up, or maybe get a longer Submit timeout, or ...?
Note: My latest edits to this post seemed to be at normal speed, might have been a temp. server problem before?

The server was also timing out for me yesterday, so I'll try to break the Tiers up into more posts and see if that helps. If people didn't know before, SuprSlow hasn't handled the Tiers list in over three years. I have complete control of his posting account with his permission. Wajo seems to have given a little insight into the problem and we know the Huddler platform can handle it.

I think you're welcome.

Yes, thank you. Your information was valuable, though it didn't completely solve my problem. After some tinkering around in the test area it does appear the length of the posts in the Tiers is causing some of the problems. Your solution of copying the list directly from the webpage does seem to work using the rich text editor in a new post, preserving the entire format and current looks if I keep the new post under a certain length. Unfortunately I can't get to that point since the new data is strictly in BBCode and it can't be edited into the site.

I did figure out I can get the new update posted under the BBC editor, if I'm willing to break the posts up into shorter lengths and somehow drop the anchor links as seen here in a test post:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1425229/picture-quality-tiers-research-and-testing/0_60#post_22322012

I might be forced to do that.

Another thing for the Huddler people, I haven't been able to access my profile when logged in for the last 24 hours.

I keep getting this message when I go to look at my profile:

I think that's due to the platform's inability to display those problematic posts properly in your activity.

Just a note...it does not look that great in the Black skin.

I also wonder...would this work better as an Article ? You know, like Wajo did for his image thread which is now an Article?

http://www.avsforum.com/a/how-to-insert-an-image-in-your-post-with-new-avs-format-june-2012

Not sure if this is a good or a bad idea in this case. Just was a thought.

I haven't used anything but the default skin for many years. Any idea of how many users are using the black skin? My research on the BBCode data led me looking into tools to convert BBCode to HTML or rich text. The ones I've come across don't seem to completely handle this data.

The word from Huddler is that it's choking on the size of the post & timing out. 165008 characters seems to be too much in a single post. smile.gif

They suggest you break the post up into more than one, or embed data into a Google Doc within the post, or use the article system.

Posting BBCode into the RTE will not work as it's not compatible.

I see that I didn't describe the details properly of the first and most important step in my post above (Post #4), so I changed the 2nd line as follows:

WITH RICH TEXT EDITOR (RTE) SELECTED IN MY PROFILE, I copied WYSIWG text from SuprSlow post (Quoted so RTE converted the BBCode) and pasted it in a different RTE WYSIWYG edit window

I completely solved the problem, though it took some clever sleight of hand posting the parts of the BBCode I could generate using the BBCode editor on this site and then simply copying that result into the RT editor. We did lose the Holdings area but the internal links for each quarter Tier were preserved after I went in and manually edited them by hand. A bit of work but it got the job done, all functionality and formatting has been completely preserved from the old list. There were definite problems with the length of the original tier posts, the forum was choking on them constantly. So they were broken up into much more manageable sizes. Wajo did give me the insight on the way to retain the formatting, by copying it directly from the webpage to the RT editor.

The following thread needs to be unstickied from the Blu-ray software forum, though I would like to keep it unlocked so I can still go in and use the code from it, if necessary in the future for future updates.

This is the new version of the PQ Tiers List that needs to be stickied in the Blu-ray Software forum, it's currently in the Post Testing Forum and needs to be moved:

Done.

Your new thread takes a long time to resolve the links to the separate Tier pages in the same thread.

You can make your new site work very quickly if you look at and emulated the RTE Source code as shown here.

I copied just the link portions of the first 3 pages, posted each on a separate WYSIWYG RTE page, and the links work very quickly from page to page. The links have ONLY the #user_ anchors without the long Thread portion (/t/the-official-picture-quality-tiers-for-blu-ray-rankings-updated-through-august-21-2012, which is the new text but your site has the old text, etc.).

That is interesting and does look to be an improvement, I'll look into it when I have more time and can clean up the code.

Should be pretty simple: just Quote post #3 in my thread sample, copy the Tier listing section at the top of the WYSIWYG edit page, and paste it at the top of every page of your thread, except post #1.

This works great and very fast as long as all your LISTS can be confined to no more than 30 posts... the fewer the better.

The default page-per-post setting is 30, but if a reader has reset that to less than 30, and your lists exceed his posts-per-page (ppp) setting, the lists on pages beyond that setting won't work, AFAICT. Your thread can have as many posts as you want, it's just your Lists that have to be in the 1st 30 posts or less.

I just found this odd limitation when trying to use it in my thread, where the simple links wouldn't link to posts 31 or beyond with my ppp set for the default 30. When I increased my ppp setting to 100, that expanded the number of separate posts that worked.

My thread doesn't currently have a way back to the main list in post #1., but your thread has the Tier links repeated . readers can always get to other Tiers via links in any post.

With this apparent post limitation for your Tier lists, I'll Delete my post in your actual thread when you're ready so it doesn't reduce the number of posts for your Lists... or maybe the 17 posts  already there are enough?

If you decide to go this route, you might consider "Reserving" the 1st 30 posts in your thread right away until you see you don't need them all.
