Sub plate amp frustration!

Hi guys,

So many years ago ( maybe 10ish ), I bought an Adire Audio Shiva. It was a very popular sub with a very high Xmax. I put it in a 17.5" x 17.5" sealed cabinet.

It sounds great and worked great for years.... Then the plate amp went out, and last year I had to get another. Well, it had an issue after 5 months, so I had to get it serviced.

At this point, I am thinking of sealing the back and going with a monoblock amp.

What would you do?

Have you considered a prosound amp? Usually a better watts/dollar proposition than a plate amp, but may give up some convenience depending on install needs and perhaps some built in features like crossover or eq (depends on model of course) that you may or may not need. Behringer ep4000 is a very popular budget option.

Yep, this is pretty much what I think I will do.... but HOLY COW.. I don't need 4000 watts!

I had 250 and with my sub it was great, even with my big room. It is rated at 600, so I would probably go 500 max or so.

I am looking for options like this.

Also, I am checking these out... but, it would be nice for a monoblock. I would look for less power, or much less and bridge if that is possible..

Seems like they can be bridged. I have a NAD 747 so I can use its cross over managment.

Are you running the sub hard? Maybe a more powerful amp is the answer. I've had six of the PE/Keiga amps in gentle use for over five years without a problem. Two of the 250w "PA" full range plates and four of the old school 250w sub plates.

I surely would not say hard. The first one I had lasted 5 years ( 240 watt ) , so that should give you an idea.

I checked my order history and have changed my original post a bit.....

Just buy an EP2k

500W is a mere 3dB louder than 250W, barely audible at LF.

Yup, outboard pro amps are the best. Its nice to have power to spare, that means the amp loafs, and runs cooler and sounds better because it is so easy to handle the load, just like a truck load of painters painting a house, more hands make easy work !!!!

6 years ago I bought a Crown XTi-1000 and I've been running subs off it every since. I don't see it breaking, perhaps not even in my lifetime!

I am pretty much sold on going this route. Now I just need to find something in my budget. the EPQ2000 will probably fit at 300, but looking for something as good for less....

But, the EPS2000 is my target at this point.

One last question.. With a sub driver that is rated at 600W, couldnt the EPS2000 kill it?
