In fact, Tom Hardy is shorter than Christian Bale, which is why they had him wearing lifts. The only scenes where Hardy pulls off Bane is the scene where he's shirtless and the one where he kills Daggett. He looks like a big wall of meat and in the rest of the scenes, he does not have that imposing presence or appearance when he's seen standing around with others. Even the stunt performer for Bane (Buster Reeves, the guy who usually plays Batman for Bale) didn't have the same bulk as Hardy did, so he looks leaner in his fight scenes. If you recall the trailer, you will remember a shot of Bane from the Sewer fight where Batman is staggering back and Bane's massive bulk comes into view to dominate the frame. That was done to give Bane the illusion of massive size and all of the shots like that are gone from the final cut from what I remember, just as many of the action shots from the final battle were cut in the editing process but still ended up in the promo vids.
Its funny you mention this. I have not seen tdkr yet, but I watched an awfull movie a while back called This Means War with Tom Hardy in it. When the opening credits listed his name, I immediately recognized the name as the guy that was about to play Bane in the next batman. I remembered the comics with Bane, so I knew he was huge. I didn't really know much about Hardy, but what I noticed was he is short. In This Means War, they do not hide the fact that he is short. He looks like Tom Cruise compared to Chris Pine, so unless Pine is really tall (I am guessing he is around 6' or so, but I don't really know), they must have used some crazy visual tricks to make him look the part of Bane. I would imagine that even the best tricks can only go so far though. I immediately started to question whether I had read wrong about Hardy being Bane, because my immediate thought was... uh.. no... but I heard he did a great job and I guess the lifts (they must have been some pretty tall ones) worked to an extent. I guess its hard to find a good actor with a tall, big frame like Bane requires. I guess its better than having the Rock or Vin Diesel playing him, right?
btw... Here's what I am talking about.

Watching the movie in real time makes the difference even more noticeable. Its kind of crazy to think about the early casting meetings... Its hard to think that Nolan saw Hardy walk into the room and say "well folks... we have found our Bane.. he is standing right there,... behind that garbage can, come on out Mr Hardy so everyone can see you" lolEdited by chadsdsmith - 11/18/12 at 2:03am
