Sound through receiver instead of tv speakers

I'm sure this is going to be a silly question.... but how do i get the sound to come from the receiver instead of the TV speakers while watching something through viera/ dlna server.

Everything works and audio is coming from the reciever (5.1) when watching any type of TV but when i go through viera it automatically go to the tv speakers.

Can someone point me to the right direction. Do i need a certain cable?

I have a Panasonic st30

I'm assuming i would have to purchase an optical cable, right? I would run it from the tv to the receiver.

Hmm, well it seems i would need to activate ARC (audio return channel.) How do i do that?

Both the tv and the avr have to be ARC capable. which requires HDMI 1.4 hardware specs (not cable spec). You can run all of your components thru the avr and then to your tv via HMDI. Turn off the tv speakers and run optical out to your avr. How do you watch tv? OTA/cable/sat?

Figured it out... had to enable ARC on the receiver and on the tv.

Otto- I was trying not to purchase the optical cable and i was able to achieve it through ARC. I just had to enable it. Works like a charm!

So are we saying that unless the receiver supports HDMI 1.4 we cannot output DNLA music through home theatre system? I have tried so many different configurations that I think I'm dumber now than when I started.
