Upgrading from a Vixia HF100 to a Panasonic 700 - what can I expect?

I think I've pretty much made up my mind for the 700K. I'm currently using a Canon Vixia HF100 (I have the canon Mic, the1 .5 and .7 convertors) and like the camera very much. If Canon made a camera that could use the convertors, I'd probably buy it. After reading lots of reviews and considering how much I want to spend the 700 looks like a fine camera.

Anyone have both of these cameras? What is the quality difference like in the 60FPS P vs the 60 i and does the difference in data rates (28 vs 17) make a huge difference? How about the sharpness of the lens?

This will be the last HD camcorder for me for a while so I want to make the right choice (I've had the HF100 for about 4 years).

Thanks.

V - you can still get the Canon Vixia HF M300 for about the same price as the V700. The M300 has a 37mm filter thread for your converters (you'll probably need a 37-46mm step-up ring, though - guessing your converters are 46mm?). The M300 also has a headphone jack, which the V700 does not have.

That said, the V700 has a larger sensor, 60p, the higher bit rate, a built in movie light and other features the M300 does not have.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the equivalent European models, the M306 and V707, with a couple of frame grabs at different light levels: http://camcorder-test.slashcam.com/compare-2e778a9a539bf967571aaeb2521e8b00.html

In the 1200 lux picture, you can see the difference between progressive and interlaced video on the moving wheel. The horizontal streaks on the M300's picture are the result of interlacing (see this article from Axis communications for an explanation of the difference).

This side-by-side of the V700 and M506 (European version of the M300's big brother, the M500), may also be helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5aQ59CdrBU

Bottom line - if you like Canon - the HF M300 is in your price range and will accommodate your converters. If you want a camera with 60p, 28MBps, a larger sensor, a higher capacity battery and focus peaking, get the V700.

Hope this is more helpful than confusing!

Thanks Bill. My canon's are 37mm (and I've seen that Cameta has the 300 refurbished for less than $200), but I think I going to the progressive format. by the time I bought cineform (which is need to remove th pulldown from the PF 30/24 of the Canon), I'm at the price of the Panasonic. I'm going to keep the HF100 in my car along with my Oly EPL1 and get the 700 to go along with my D7000 (hmmm, numerically that seems destined:)).

Thanks for your help and thoughtful reply.

Also Bill, I must stay away from your threads. I think I've just upped my budget. BTW for under a $1000 US what's your favorite camcorder?

Sorry, V - didn't mean to cost you extra money smile.gif

My favorite 60p camera at the $1000 price point is the Panasonic X900, the updated version of the terrific TM900, which I own.

In addition to quality of the still and video images from the 900, the key features for me are the viewfinder, headphone jack, mic jack and standard cold shoe.

Cheers,

Bill

Before you move to the Panasonic, you should consider downloading some sample clips. It's going to look different than the Canon image.

Newer technology aside; 30p or 60p, Canon or Panasonic may not technically be "better" - a lot of this is a matter of personal preference/how one sees the images.

xfws - that is a very good point. I love the HF100 colors in good light. My D7000 with it ability to image a black cat in a coal mine make low light not quite so urgent on the upgrade. I think I'm going to hold off until the next round of cameras. I don't know if I should get a Zacuto shoulder rig for my D7K or even if the D7xxxx if it had 60P and a better live view focusing system would be better. I'm going on a very intensive photo/video shoot Saturday through Tuesday and that will tell me more about my needs after I evaluate the results from all three of my cameras that image with video. So far when shooting from a full rig I just love the results I get from Nikkor glass on my Olympus and Nikon cameras. The little Canon does well but you really have to nail the correct FPS/Stop or Aperature and it still lacks the sharpness of Nikon when viewed. I need three systems, and right now I can't afford a camcorder that would use my Nikkor glass, so I'm back to really looking hard at a new camcorder.

I hope this trip answers some of my questions. Will mostly be imaging Mustangs, Big Horn Sheep, Mountain goats, Reptiles, few birds, and landscapes.I'm going to be packing about 50 pounds of gear, but all in my 4x4. If I could spend 5 to 20 G's I might find it an eaiser decision, but I might as well want an Arri Alexia. For the moment I'm having two thoughts, look for closeouts on the current stuff at the prosumer level in January, or see what the D7100 brings to the table. But the DSLR to get off the tripod I would have to spend more on a shoulder mount and perhaps a focus puller for it to run and gun. If I did that I'd get cineform and access the 24/30 FPS on my Vixia.

I appreciate the input from all here as I'm going to be imaging a lot now that I'm retired and I don't want to find myself buying a camera a year as I find it takes me a while to learn a camera and get the best out of it.
