Paint vs Screen

Just read an article on projectorcental.com. Had me thinking. I have an SI Gamma HD screen and I can see the texture on the screen when sitting close and from further away, its a little noticeable because I know its there. Paint should be the best way to go to get no texture in the image from a closer distance. I had the JVC RS55 and I am upgrading to a current model, to take advantage of the e-shift, I need to seat close to the screen. I don't want to see texture in the screen anymore, so am I going the right route? I know the Stewart Snomatte has the best image for what you project is what you get. A 100in 2.4:1 screen is about $2000 and to paint my wall and build a frame around it is only $200 at max.

Also, I'm moving into a house and having my theater room. I know if you paint the room all black, it improves the image like no other thing, but is there an alternative to having a black hole? I want the best possible image, so if I have to paint all black I will, but it will be a sacrifice.

Not at all certain the Snowmatte is "The best" but a light neutral Gray paint properly applied will offer you an exceptionally smooth screen. You'll want to spray on whatever choice you make, so consider this inexpensive HVLP Rig.

Room surfaces need not be "Black" but the ceiling should be considerably darker than the walls in a room such as a dedicated Theater. Using a Mid-level Gray for walls (perhaps with a touch of Blue or Green mixed in) and a very dark Gray on the ceiling (both colors in Flat) is an attractive combination.

Very dark Flat Red for Walls and ultra dark Gray for Ceilings is another choice.
