My First post after tons of reading - Your Opinion on my budget HT system.

Hi,
After reading over many many threads here I have put together a very basic in budget HT system for my living room. I live in a apartment and my living room is about 9x18 max 10x20. Would like to avoid the hassle of mounting the projector on ceiling, but am open to go that way too if need be.

My use is will be 60% Music + 30% Movies + 10% Occasional Gaming
.
I would like the speakers to be compact and was intially looking at Bose Accoustimass 10 but changed my mind after reading through here.


Recieiver: Denon 2112ci or 2312 (still deciding if the extra 100$ is worth on 2312)

Speakers:Energy Take Classic 5.1 (Plan here is to upgrade to a 7.1 after a year or by adding two floorstanding tower speakers) I figured this would be an ideal compromise between size and performance.

Projector: Benq W710ST

This works out to 500$(receiver)+400$(Speakers)+650$(Proj)=1550$ which is as per my budget of 1500$.

Please let me know what do you think of this and what would you have changed in the above setup and why, if you were to be in my shoes smile.gif

I am planning to project onto my wall, will wait and see if I can get a good deal on a screen or go the DIY way later on.

I would recommend putting more money into speakers. You could start out with LCR to get you going. Find a good sub like the klipsch rw-12d for $300 and your surrounds and back surround when budget allows. The surrounds don't need to be timber matched like the front 3 and you can buy them as budget allows.

Although there's certainly nothing wrong with your choices, you would be much better served getting a lower model AVR (eg. 1612 or 1712) and putting the savings towards better speakers (even if only L/C/R/sub as pukemon suggests). The rule of thumb is that the 5.1 speaker setup should cost at least 2x the cost of the AVR. If you want a networking model, suggest looking at the new 1613. You can review a comparison of the features in each of the XX12 and XX13 models by reviewing the respective Owner's threads linked in my sig. Purchasing from one of several authorized resellers that provide a discount (eg. Electronics Expo) will provide for additional savings.

Thanks a ton for all the replies, I figure getting the LCR & sub is very important in the setup . Right now my job is such that I am on the move frequently and live in an apartment most of the time here in US, this is the reason I am looking at a compact easy carry around system for a year or two after which I will be returning to my place where I have a home - meaning will be buying the heavy high performance floor standing speakers and completing the system using the existing surround speakers,sub and receiver. Considering this, do you think it would be a good idea for me to just go for a decent 5.0 speakers like Energy for now and for Sub I could up my budget and get a good sub right away or buy a decent one now and add another identical one when I buy my fronts?

Once again, I really appreciate & thank you for the above inputs.

Ok, gave it a rethink and upped the budget a little - saw the energy s10.3 on sale at 199 and pulled the trigger on that one.I am thinking of going with a pair of Energy rc10 + rcr center, that should fit the budget for now. What do you guys say? and are there any cheap rear speakers that i could pick as well? I have decided to put off floorstanding speakers for now.

Floor standing speakers aren't a requirement for good HT sound. They are more important for music. Just keep in mind to get some that can play down to 80hz - 100hz might be acceptable but anything above that and you begin to get localized sounds coming from the sub.

Thanks, did a quick search to confirm and heres the ratings -

Energy S10.3 sub - they claim it can go down to 21hz.
Pair of Energy RC10 : 50Hz-23000Hz +/- 3dB
Center Energy RC-LCR : 48Hz-23000Hz +/-

As a reminder, you'll be raising the crossovers of the FL/C/FR up to 80hz anyway after running the Auto EQ program in order to let the sub better handle the lower frequencies.

Thanks, btw just wanted to mention that the Denon threads on your signature have been of immense help in trying to understand the differences between the xx12 and xx13 models. I have finally placed order for all the items. Putting down the cost for the benefit of others, and is there a thread that tracks the prices that the members have paid recently?

Denon 2113 : 495$
Energy RC 10: 219$
Energy RC-LCR: 249$
Energy S 10.3: 199$

Had an update for you guys, after some loooong loooong wait with my speakers getting delivered one by one - I now have my set all at my place. Made a quick dash to nearest best buy for a temp tv and hdmi+sub cable and hooked up everything.

Was mighty mighty impressed with the audio quality out of the box, it was about 10 in the night by the time I had it hooked up so havent done the audyssey setup yet and been playing some avg music at very very low volumes.

I was initially very skeptical with mine being a very low budget build, but it turned out to be far far more than I could have asked for. Bose accoustimas was my initial choice after seeing a bose system at my friends place , I can already tell this basic build is far far better that that.

Hope you're enjoying your new setup, SandyMan. I'd like to pick your brain regarding your projector...I am looking into getting a BenQ W710ST, but haven't found a whole lot of info on it. I think I've picked up enough bits and pieces here and there to convince myself to pull the trigger, but one thing I haven't been able to find any info on is the input lag of this projector. So my question to you...what do you think of your W710ST so far, specifically the input lag?

Sorry for the delayed response, was out travelling on work. I havent got a projector yet but have done a lot of reading so far and decided on Viewsonic pro 8200. I missed the recent deal on new egg and this projector can be had for about 650-700$ when on a deal. Its been a long wait for me for the projector, repent missing out on this deal.

Benq W710ST was on my list intially but decided to stick with a 1080p native one. Have seen many people recommend this projector for gamin and its got some good reviews and feedback here.
