Plasma letter box bars are lighter than on screen blacks

Hello all.

I just got an LG PM6700 which when watching letterboxed blu rays, the bars are lighter than the blacks on the screen. Is this to counter IR? is there a way to reduce it?

sometimes your eye can trick you. With my tv since the bars are next to the black bezel you can see there lighter. With the blacks in the middle of the screen it's harder to tell. Try and see a point in the movie where a black object connects to the black bars and they probably will be the same. Unless it is something like floating blacks.

Yeah watching iron man 2 when the image is black the letterbox bars are definitely a dark grey compared to the black on screen

I can confirm identical behavior on a PM9700. It's definitely not an illusion of any sort. The bars are not even close to black.

I find it really distracting, and may return the TV because of it. I'll call LG first and see what they have to say...

The black in the movie should be the the same as the black letterbox bars.

Hey djama,

Let us know what they say.

Would be interested to know.

I can live with this. This tv has way less problems than all the panas I had the last year

^^ Well, I decided to post a question using LG's "Ask and Answer" on the website, so there would be a response I could link to.

The answer according to Neil (a "Staff Expert"), is that blu-ray discs don't have black bars. rolleyes.gif

Here is the question and response (presently the last question on the 3rd page) http://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-50PM9700/answers

I guess I'll try phone support now...
