Uh, should the woofer face the wall or the open side of the room?

Whichever you like, but I'd try it each way and see if it's different (i.e. better bass), in some placements even at an angle might be preferable. You have a dual opposed design? I have an Empire and it's currently with one woofer facing the wall but I've had it the other way and at an angle, too.

Driver direction facing does effect sound above about 50hz typically --- by 70 or 80hz the difference in frequency response based on driver facing can be quite significant. At 30hz it won't matter a lick.

Without measuring gear you're just guessing I've seen rooms (like mine) where the flattest frequency response is found with the drivers facing the outside walls, and rooms where it is best to toe them in, and rooms where facing them directly forward towards the listening position is best.
