Use screen from rear projection TV with a home theater projector

It will work, but it will likely be blisteringly bright, unless it's one of the more uncommon lowish gain RP screens.

It could work pretty well with a pj that lets you throttle down the light and increase CR with an iris.

NO, this will not work like you think it might.
There are screens that are both Front/Rear, however if your screen is a rear projection screen only then it will not work like you might think.

If you do see the image it will most likely be 1/3 the brightness and quality of the same screen used as designed.
Rear projection TV screens are usually coupled with a lenticular behind it and because of that it will not work at all unless used with that as designed.

Have you tried it yet?

I have seen RP TV Screens replaced with acrylic projection screens which can be used for both front or rear but I don't think that is what you are trying to do.....curious to know what your experience is if you do try it though. Keep us posted with updates as this sounds interesting....

Correct, it likely won't work because the Fresnel lens on the back of the screen is designed for a relatively narrow throw ratio range, which is likely about half of what your pj's is.

What screen size are we talking about?

There are very inexpensive low-gain RP screens available, which are essentially tinted flexible plastic, as well as affordable acrylic ones (still low gain; it's the Fresnel and lenticular lenses that make the high-gain ones so expensive).
