What to do with Mitsubishi HC6800

Hi there,

I just ordered a Mitsubishi HC6800 to go in a non-dedicated Home Theater. The room doubles as a spare bedroom, has white walls and ceiling, and dark brown carpet. There are two South facing windows, and the 'door' is an approximately 4' wide opening facing the wall the screen will sit.

I can use blackout curtains etc to control the light from the windows and doorway, but I don't think I will have a completely controlled environment.

Spent the last couple of days reading he laminates thread and was fairly set on doing a WilsonArt Fashion Grey screen. I only got to page 30 or so, and then started reading about Silver Fire v2, no I don't know what I want to do.

I want to do a 2.35:1 screen approximately 96" wide, I will then use some form of masking system for 16:9 material.

I have never spray painted but I am willing to buy a gun if that is the route I decide to go down.

I'm guessing most people will suggest the paint. I think that is what I'd like to do, I was thinking of a SF v2.5 in 3.0.

I own the house and I am happy to paint the wall and then put up a border, or is it better to buy a Substrate and paint that?

Help!!!

Painting a wall is all about the wall's smoothness. But size matters as well. When your screen is to be no more than 96" wide and formatted to be a 2.35:1 screen, then it's 41" "tall' . Since there are extremely inexpensive 4' x 8' sheet options out there that will allow you to hang a perfectly smooth substrate, messin' with any wall that is not already ideally smooth makes no sense. IMO...and I'm a stanch advocate of using a wall whenever possible.

High Contrast paints like SF 2.5 3.0 must be applied on smooth surfaces. What you determine to use depends upon your location and the availability of various materials.

So where do you live?

Thanks for the reply.

I live in Dallas.

Since writing my original post, I completely read the Silver Fire v2 thread and ordered the Graco refurb off eBay and remembered the walls in the room are far from flat. Looks like I will be buying a board.

I went to my local Home Depot and Lowes and both stock the Trifty White board, and at a price that can't be beat. Right now I think that is Deluxe Plan A.

How does the Trifty White perform vs Sintra?

What is the best way to mount the Triftty White? I was thinking of screwing it directly to the wall, and then mounting a frame round the edges.

Am I best off painting it in position, or doing so in the garage and then moving it? If I do it in the room how messy does it get? Will I need to cover everything? Build a 'spraybooth'? Where can you buy the thin plastic sheeting?

Which version of SF v2.5 would be best for the HC6800, roughly 100" 2.35:1, moderate ambient light during the day but controllable at night. I will be ceiling mounting the projector and can place it anywhere from 10' to 16'.

Thanks for your help.

Crappy new Forum format!

An entire response lost because a missed key stroke advanced the page and the "back" button does not restore the previous page's content. 30 minutes wasted, and a crappy attitude makes for a bitter taste before my Coffee.

This time will have to be a condensed version

Only if you scale back to a 92" diagonal screen. You might be misstating your size. By 100" "wide" do you mean "diagonal" or actual width? Therein lies all the difference in what substrate you can consider

Sintra is "Sign Board" and as such is made to receive paint TWH is not....but can be used if paint is applied correctly. Sintra is also easier to cut / hang.

That's how I Roll with it. You do need to have add 2" to any screen dimensions on all sides to accommodate doing so.

Paint it in position...always best. Not too messy, as it's HVLP and at the sizes you considering the Gun only runs for less than 60 seconds. Covering is best. Using Thumbtacks, hanging Plastic "Drapes" from the ceiling is easy. Home Depot. 9' x 12' x 0.7 mil @ $1.99 ea 3 Pack @ $ 3.99.

Mount the Pk at 11' 6" SF 2.5 3.0

I'm outta here...for now. wink.gif Clarify you actual desired screen size / dimensions.

Ok, so I hate this forum format as well. I'd written half my reply and then opened a new tab on my iPad to check the dimensions on the calculator, and when I returned it reloaded the page and nixed my hard work.

Anyhow, it seems that an 8' wide board will give approximately 92" useable which equates to 100" diagonal at 2.35:1. I had originally gone with that number as that was the limit of the Thrifty White, however, I am not adverse to spending the extra to use Sintra if it will be that much better, thus I can also to go bigger!

The room is aprox 12' wide, and I will be sitting at roughly 12' from the screen. What size would you recommend? For me quality is more important than 'wow' of huge monster screen.

What is the best way to hang Sintra? Am I right in thinking the supplier will cut it to size?

3mm or 6mm? Can I roll it up and put in the back of a SUV?

Are there any videos out there showing the process of hanging, and more importantly painting?

Thanks
