Largest LCD TV reasonable in a room 12' wide?

What is the largest size LCD HDTV you think is reasonable to install in a room that is only 12 feet wide?

A couch will be on the other side of the room with a coffee table in front of it.


55"?

65"?

70"?

80"?

90"?

I sit 9ft from a 70" screen and could have easily gone with an 80" (just didn't want to pay double the price) and I could even see using a 90" from that distance or a 100" projection screen.

From 12' I would get the biggest set you can afford or go with a projector if that would work.

It's whatever you're comfortable with. There are charts around that give the optimal viewing distance to screen size but it's up to you. Bigger is not always better because the closer you sit, the more visible the imperfections in the tv and/or source are visible.

A 90" diagonal screen would have a screen width of about 78". Multiply that by 1.5 and you get 9.75'. I know the math looks good, but I think that seems very close for such a big set. I have a projection system in another room, so I want something for news and casual TV watching. Maybe a 80" screen would do the trick and the cost is allot lower.

A 55" OLED would also be a consideration if the price were right. I do not know when those will be available. If they are 10 grand forget it.

OK, I have thought about this far too much. In a 12' wide room one can assume that one's head will be, say, 10' from the screen. Given that the human eye's limit to resolve detail is roughly 1 arc/minute (1/60th of a degree), keeping the pixels of a 1080 screen under that size means that the screen can take up no more than 32 degrees of view. 1920 pixels / 60 pixels per degree of view = 32 degrees.

A 70" screen takes up 32 degrees of view at 9' 2" (remembering that it is 61" wide). Any closer and you will start to see pix els.

An 80" screen would need 10.5 feet (a bit too much).

So the answer is 70".

Hi Steve:
My room is 12 feet wide by 14 feet long - I'm pretty comfortable viewing 11 feet away from a 70 inch panel. I had room for the 80, but it would have taken over the room. (It would have been very cool..) On the other hand, a larger screen would be a benefit at that 10 feet for 3D, in my opinion. Pixel structure will vary depending upon your souce.

Were you planning on mounting this or putting it on a stand?
