Great progress!!! might throw an extra bead for where you are mounting the legs to ensure an air-tight seal around those wood panels you cut.

eek.gifeek.gif *jaws drop* ... Looks like most Internet Direct black subwoofer finish. Better than some I've seen.

Awesome results!!!!

Wow. That Duratex has evolved into a great looking finish. Nice work.

How will this compare with a LMS ULTRA 18 Sub? Im looking at doing something soon and I be darn if you guys arnt going bigger. In a room 16 wide by 21 deep with 9 ft ceilings how will 4 of the 21's differ from 4 LMS18'S? MY THEATER IS 99% MOVIES. What db could one reach at the seating position 14 foot back?

Can someone post a link to where these 21's are bought and whats the best brand?

As for the comparison, lms cost $400 more than the ftw-21 so you could get a few more ftw-21 for the same price as the lms, not to mention you dont need anywhere near as much power to drive them at rms. Based purely on winisd beta, the ftw-21 puts out more spl than the lms at rms but thats not the whole story that comes from building subs. You need to factor in sound quality, distortion, and others to get the whole picture. The lms is an excellent woofer, but to me its not worth the extra $400.

Wow! I've been watching since you started and have been waiting for the final finish pics. They look great!

I would add some more PL to your seams and around the 5" squares. Just my opinion as I'm sure you put a lot of glue on the squares and the screws will be short enough not to go through them. Adding more glue to the joints and around the squares now will be much easier than pulling the drivers later if there is an air leak. I've built 12 boxes for 21s in the past year and had to pull the first two to patch up some seams where there was voids (mainly on the front baffles and where the front baffles were together). I've added my back panels last after the first two way could get a bunch of glue on the baffles. Like I said they could be good but saw a few places where there wasnt a bunch of glue. And just to say it again the finish is awesome! Better than any of my DIY cabs by far.

Oh, and winisd may be off a little because it seems like they really need some power to get moving like they can. Once they do move though, watch out!

Looking good, FS. I'm wrapping up my build as well. Just finished the final coat of Duratex and waiting for it to dry as we speak. Hoping to have my drivers this week or next.

+1!

Great build and nice touch with the legs. I've yet to see that done.

You got a tracking # on those subs yet? I didn't see what amp you are going to be using?

popalock, dbldare, baniels, TnTBigman, beastaudio,
Many thanks for the compliments and tips on my build...I'm happy with it...I need the drivers to know how happy I am though.

VEXXD,
Please post a picture of your build...I'd love to see it...please!
Also please share your thoughts on Duratex

Audiovideoholic,
I've followed your build thread and I use your picture of your front stage when my friends say I'm crazy.eek.gif
YOUR build is jaw drooping to say the least and I would kill to listen to it!!!!
10x 21" subs? How could that NOT be crazy? (BTW, I'm in complete admiration of that!)
Also, I might as well tell you here that I'm so sorry with all the mishaps/bad luck you've had so far.
I hope all turns out well.

I have a couple of questions:
Should I put polyfill pillows inside the cabs?
If YES, how much?
When I get the drivers what should I do and especially NOT do? (Re: Break-in)
When Mark sends the drivers, does he send a tracking # ?
He said 2 1/2 weeks for delivery but from what I read here most everyone has been waiting for more than a month!
Am I dreaming thinking I'll get them next week?

FYI,
The FTW21's will be driven with a clone amp (10000Q)
I's also looking forward to hearing how they sound with music as I listen to LOTS of music too!

PS. I'm now thinking of putting 2 more for the front corners...BUT...am completely scared of how it will sound with music.
Would having 4x 21" subs be bad for music?
I've taken a few pictures throughout my build that I'll post in a thread at some point. In regards to Duratex, I decided to do a test run on the bottoms of the cabs first. I used the blue, textured roller you can order along with the Duratex and I was not a fan of the result at all. It was too aggressive for my tastes. I switched it up with a typical 3/8" nap roller for the rest of the cabs and liked how it turned out a lot better. I did all four and still have about half left. I almost ordered two buckets as I was worried about running out...

Polyfill, I'm using pillows from Ikea as they're the cheapest I could find in my area (even cheaper than Walmart). They're around 1lb. of polyfill per pillow so I'm doing a pillow per cu. ft. (give or take).

When I ordered my drivers, Mark stated it'd be three weeks as he was falling behind. He emailed me middle of last week stating he started on my order and they should be done by this week. I don't expect them until next week, which would make it six weeks total. Slightly over the estimated delivery date wink.gif
post #42 of 356
Those turned out GREAT Fatshaft! Very nice build! smile.gif
post #43 of 356
Yeah, 1lb of polyfill per cuft like posted above. If walmart has pillows on sale it is cheaper to buy pillows rather than the bags of it.

Thanks for the compliments! And yes adding more will work just fine for music as long as your mains can keep up. If can cross your mains at 80 or under that would be best. Music on these is awesome to say the least. And, if you have already ordered the 10000 good luck, if not I would get a 14000! There is no way I would risk buying another 10000 and I have all my enclosures built to add another. I'm just going to end up buying a bunch of 14000s after I completely finish the theater unless something better comes along before then.

Oh, I'm not really sure about tracking as my order was shipped on pallets so was completely different than standard shipping.

FYI to anyone whos already got their order shipped from mark, I had mine shipped on 8/28 and it is still stuck in WINNIPEG, MB due to Shipment exception: Improper or missing paperwork - Inadequate descriptions - Contact customer service. Sigh guess its better than waiting 6 weeks biggrin.gif

Thanks very much edoggrc51.

audiovideoholic,
I already have the 10000Q and it's working flawlessly for me.
I have some pillows left over from my MFW15 builds and will use those and stuff the cabs with.
I'm just not sure how much I need cause I have no idea how much 1 pillow weighs!

VEXXD, I look forward to seeing your build but am anxiously waiting to hear your impressions when you get your FTW21...please let me know! Thanks

********************************************************************************************************

Well my cabs are done and it's very painful waiting for the subs. I'm going to ask Mark when he thinks he'll send mine over cause I'd like to take a week off work to play with the subs and I'd like to learn REW so I can take measurements...I have alot to learn!!!

Anyways, here's the pucks/legs installed. I put silicone under every puck beforee I screwed them in.
I used 2" screws so I wouldn't go through the 2nd layer of 3/4" MDF as you can see in the picture below. I did not put alot of care there cause it's underneath the box and couldn't care less how it looks there. When the silicone dried, I applied some black flat paint...enjoy.

I really hope I get them soon

Excellent finish with the Duratex and great build!

I must have missed it, what kind of roller did you use to apply the Duratex?

I am not sure if anyone has compared the FTW 21 to the LMS Ultra, at least I have never run across a comparison. I think we all should convince edogg to order up 4 FTW 21's to compare to his 4 LMS Ultra, cmon edogg, TOFTT tongue.gifbiggrin.gif

Seriously though 4 of either sub should be insane in your room.

C'mon MJ! You already got like 17 subs, what's 4 more? haha

Then you and Edogg can do paper-rock-scissors over who will be lugging their subs to each others house to do the comparison...

Hey, I think BassThatHz has the FTW-21 and the LMS Ultra. Maybe he can give first person sub-vs-sub perspective?

I used a lint free 6" foam roller. It was a 6-pack for like $10. I used the cheapest I could find and it did a great job!
What I learned with using Duratex is to spread the Duratex first then quickly start rolling the finish...just like he does in the how to video.
This stuff dries really quick! If you keep rolling it becomes tacky to work with. (Maybe the fact I did this outside increases the drying time)
Very happy with the finish...Now my 4x MFW15 cabs look like crap! Not sure what I'm going to do with those.

If we're lucky we might even see a video...c'mon BassThatHz, throw us a bone!

Anyways to me...the FTW's at $550 a pop compared to the LMS Ultra at $925 a pop, if they even come close to the
LMS Ultra, then it's worth it and it's saving me quite a few $$$. But what do I know...

Both have an xmax of roughly 34mm correct? I think it would be a good shootout!

If I know ThatHz as well as I think I do, he will definitely get a video posted up quick...

However, I'd like to see measurements and get his subjective thoughts on how the two compare. When it comes to video the only thing we can really tell is how much they move! And we all know the RE XXX is the king of "movement..."

I was pretty impressed with the UXL-18 really. My only gripes were the cheap cork gasket (Which I think he has done away with) and the fragile dustcap. Performance wise it did great. If the 21" version acts like its little brother in most respects it should be a power house.

Thanks for that info Ricci...it's good to know...

Well...change in plans for me now...This disease (DIY) is getting the better part of me.
Here we go again...

Not to stir the pot at all but have you guys seen Ricci's test of his DIY XXX ported sub? He said it had substantial numbers to 8hz outside! That thing would be flat to 5hz in my room and at least 120 dBs at 10hz with a single! That is almost what my 8 eD sealed subs was doing and I get about 3 dBs more now but from 6 subs. That thing is truly a beast! Of course the midbass sucks compared to what I have right now but once flat it won't matter.

I did, and im already looking into building something of the sort. I love the sealed application but I think I could really open everything up with two ported RE's. I think about 120db's at 10hz sounds about right. And it would be cheaper than two more RE's...but 4 18 XXX 18's just sounds fun biggrin.gif
