Why is Sony HDR-CX260V Higher resolution than Panasonic HC-V700K

I'm wondering why the Panasonic takes lower resolution still images
even tho the sensor of the HDR CX260V is lower size than the panasonic.

the sony says its taking 8.9 MP still images while the panasonic is only 5.9mp lol?
