Sony HMZ-T2 Personal 3D Viewer HMD Dedicated Thread - Page 8

I just sold my last HMZ-T2 I had in stock.

I won't be getting anymore in stock, however if you are quite desperate for one contact me and I "may" be able to get one new off a Japan auction site. I have found a few selling on there so far.

I still have 1 HMZ-T1 on my site

Well, I got my HMZ-T2 two days ago and returned it the next day. I could not get it to fit comfortably at all. I wear glasses, which may be an issue, but I also felt like the forehead pad (regardless of how I adjusted it) did not allow me to press the lenses close enough to my face to see properly through them. More importantly, I could not get the screens in focus. Even with the finer adjustments, either the right or left corner would always be blurry. And if I could ever get both corners in focus, the middle would be blurry! Maybe that had to do with its poor fit for me, as I know bravia3D said he could get full focus.

Both of these issues were dealbreakers for me. But I also did not find the picture quality that impressive. The blacks are not completely black, and not much better than 2011/12 Panasonic plasmas I've seen. I personally found the screen-door effect very noticeable and distracting, making everything look much less detailed than it should be. The contrast and colours did not seem that great either, certainly not revolutionary compared with other display technologies. Finally, the 'big screen' effect was significantly reduced by the fact that internal light from the screens reflects off the plastic edges of the lenses, so it was always obvious to me that I was effectively looking at the screen through goggles.

I again qualify these impressions by saying that some of my issues may have been related to my poor fit, but I don't think they all were.

It's very disappointing for me because I was looking forward to these for a long time. But Sony would need to make some very significant improvements before I purchase another pair. Looks like it's back to plasmas for me for the next few years until full OLED displays come along for a reasonable price.

I do want to commend the excellent service I got at the Sony Centre Robina though. If you're around the Gold Coast and want a pair, they have stock (or, at least, they did two days ago) and are very helpful.

Very surprising, yes I found it fits very well on me. So much better than the HMZ-T1 ever did. I also found the picture is full screen on mine and no blurryness at all. I love the black levels, of course not as black as a plasma but pretty darn black! I also noticed no relfection.

Not to be rude, but is your head a bit big or face long? No offense please, asking only because I am curious why it didn't fit you well.

All bets are off when you can't get them to fit......
No offense taken! I don't think my head is too big; I don't have any trouble wearing normal size hats, for example, and I had to adjust the bands quite tightly before it would stay in place on my head. Maybe my head is strangely shaped though! I'm not sure. I tried my very best to get it to fit and it just wasn't happening. As I said, maybe my glasses had something to do with it, but I'm not going to go out and buy contacts just to use the HMZ. It was expensive enough as it is.

EDIT: And ckong, yes, that's why I qualified my impressions. I'm not sure that things like the contrast, black level, screen door effect and visible lens edges would change if it fitted better. But you never know. As always, you would need to try it yourself to know whether you have those problems.

It is quite the investment, hope the return process was easy.
I never got around to trying the T1, but I love what it is trying to achieve so im jumping head first into T2.

With the optics / glasses, I can see close up almost 20/20 but I do need glasses for long distance, could you guess how far the screen is from you? Like 3m?
Hmm, it's hard to say how far away it seemed. My glasses are for short-sightedness and my vision is quite poor even from fairly short distances. If I had to guess from my memory of how blurry the screen was without my glasses, I'd say a metre or two. I could still make out some of the text on the setup screens, so it can't have been much more than that.

Someone might have some more precise data about the lenses that might be more helpful -- I'm not sure whether anything like that has been released.

As I say, I really think it's something people need to try to see whether it works with them and whether they're bothered by any flaws in the picture quality. Luckily the returns process was easy for me (as I say, I only used it for an hour or so before packing it up) so hopefully if you buy from a store as I think you were you shouldn't have trouble if you need to take it back.

Sounds like how i did exsperience the t1 before i modded it into a ski mask unit. cool.gif Hopfully the t2 will arrive 2 day and ill try it out...The tunnel vision i guess will be there, but im hoping comfort is a lill better than the first.

What i dont get is the black level ur seeing? As on my t1 i couldnt see the black bars vs the dark around the screen. Oled turns them self completly off vs a plasma screen who needs sum light to the screen, making the blacks really good but not 100percent off. A panasonic vt50 in dark will have a diffrence on the black bars vs its black frame as the plasma cells cant (yet) shut 100percent off.

Pioneers last concept kuro in 2008 clamed it could turne the cells 100 percent off, that but was never out an stunning 9mm thinn plasma smile.gif

The thing with T2 and glasses, you need to align both properly in order to prevent lens flare which create a haze that diminishes contrast and color. As a eyeglass wearer, I had a hard time initially with the T2, but after many tries and "mod" I got both to align properly for a much better viewing experience. Hopefully the T3 will have better ergonomics for eyeglass wearer.
You may be right, but I did try my best to make it work and it just wouldn't. I'm not trying to spread any misinformation, just sharing my personal experience. I'm glad that others have been able to enjoy it -- it's good to see Sony innovate and I hope there's sufficient support for this unit that they continue development in the future.
Alot of people had issues with the T1, even so the T2 seems to be doing quite well with the 5 units ordered from my SONY store sold.
I would love to see a T3 with optical attachments.

Got my t2 biggrin.gif woop wopp

And i, so happy suprised that its in my eyes muuuch better than thefirst t1 cool.gif

List goes .. so light so small .. cool.gif It dont rest on my nose at all vs theold t1 that needed to sit on it to even give me a picture-.
Picture looks sharper, better accurate colours got a 100percent blurr free picture stright out of the box.
Much more picture settings to adjust it pop out in 3D seems waay better.

Havent testet any gaming on it as i just had it for a hour ...

Thanks for making me less happy with my hmz-T1.

Seriously, I'm glad to hear that Sony had made some nice improvements especially in the weight and optics.

I don't mean to rain on your parade by any means. But my gut feeling tells me that your experience is a placebo effect. You might be right with the fact that it is a little lighter and smaller But as far as optics and picture quality goes I think it's an exact replica of the first version Even Sony doesn't mention any upgraded optics in the spec list . But hey Enjoy it by all means!
Well, I agree with vak 100%... I also feel the picture quality seems better on the T2 than the T1. It does look sharper when comparing them side to side. This may be due though because with the T2 I get full screen no blur. But on the T1 I get loss of screen and blurryness on edges.
No this thing is sharper n more clear cool.gif

Colors are razor sharp now vs more washed out on the t1 the green colour on the t1 always looked so odd.
Its lighter not as front heavy , for me the up n down on the front head pad makes it easy to find the sweet spot , all weight is off my nose, its not even toching it and with no blurred edges .Been using it now for close to 4 hours and still going strong smile.gif

Cant remembernow if the t1 could controll a bd player this can cool.gif

Zeiss Cinemizer has very good diopter function for eyeglass wearer. It will be great if Sony can incorporate that into future revision........

Now THAT is good news! Sounds like they've really answered a lot of the concerns with the t1...
How is that possible if the resolution is the same, yet it is sharper? Wouldn't the grid be more visible? Have they improved the pixel fill of the oled panels?
On the t1 u got the same feel as closly lookng at a pj screen, where u see the squares of each grid, on the t2 that is gone it looks more smooth smile.gif really enjoy gaming on it vs the t1 that just irritated me
post #232 of 1016
Interesting. I remember reading how you couldn't stand the visible pixel structure in the t1.

Is the perceived image size different?

i'd rather wait for more opinions regarding T2. i can belive it's slightly more comfortable, but i'm pretty sure that display/optics are pretty much the same.
don't forget how much hate he was spreading regarding T1. i told everyone that in extended period, your eyes gets adjusted, therefore the image is becoming more clear and so.

either way, T2 is way overpriced, but there is no competitor on the market.. st1080 is ****, oculus is only a prototype at the moment - but i put big hopes onto it.
some people are already working on drivers to run 2D games and movies at higher fov.

i ordered dev kit which i should get somewhere in january.
Over priced? Perhaps, but it sells and people are gladly buying it as is with its imperfections.
The wait is killing me for mine, MotorStorm's (3D PS3 game) beauty will make my eyes bleed!!!!

If either of the 3 MotorStorm games look as glorious as I hope ill personally hand write an appreciation letter to Evolution and the HMZ team.
In three weeks i'll have one as well, hopefully. biggrin.gif I plan to use it connected to my PC and PS3, for movies and some games. Anyone tested it on PC, playing 3d games? Should i have any concerns? Everything works ok?
vaktmestern, I'm very happy for you if you can't notice the pixel grid but I cannot understand how you do not notice it at all on the T2 when it bothered you so much on the T1.

For what it's worth, I could see the pixel grid easily on the T2. It did not look materially different from the T1 I tried in store, from memory anyway. It didn't bother me too much on the T1 with video content and I could have probably lived with it on the T2, but it was definitely noticeable. Again, I had a poor fit but I really don't think a better fit would have magically made the grid disappear.

The reality is that, as far as we know, the displays are the same as on the T1 and while the optics may be improved, they cannot compensate for an inherent lack of resolution.

Just curious, do you notice the "grid" in all instances or in scene with area of uniform color like skies, snow, water.....?
I didn't have it for that long so I didn't test it with too many sources. It basically looked like I was sitting too close to a big TV or projector, so you could see the small squares making up the pixel structure. It was more obvious in light areas of uniform colour like skies, but I could notice it generally -- a kind of 'lower-res' look compared with my TVs and other displays. I probably would have gotten used to it, but it did seem like I was missing some detail from the 1080p content I was watching.
No grid on the t2 so thats bull rolleyes.gif on the t1 thats another story and of corse sum of the 1080p is missing as its a 720p unit wink.gif but i guess that is sumting u was aware of before buying it rolleyes.gif
post #240 of 1016
Get the t2 adjusted in place and this thing really shine smile.gif remember its not only left n right on the lenses what counts, but adjust it up n down using the front head pad
when u hit the sweet spot its magic cool.gif

Its a odd device yes, a tv is more easy to use but give it a go with a fave movie or game in a dark room setting and its easy not to be impressed by the exsperience it gives.

Use game mode for gaming as its slightly brighter and i use movie mode for blurays as it has more a natural look-
