Preamp with Digitals Ins and Outs

Hey folks, I am in the process of building up a stereo system in my home. I'm building my own speakers and running them with active crossovers. Here's what I have now:

- 2x HUGE towers with a Bohlender RD75 Planar and 2x Dayton RS270-8 10" drivers per tower.
- 1x Behringer DCX2496 Digital Crossover
- 1x Behringer DEQ2496 EQ/RTA
- 2x Behringer A500 Reference Amps
- 1x Denon DN-C615 CD Player

Now... I need a preamp. Here's how the signal path will go:

CD PLAYER---S/PDIF--->PREAMP---S/PDIF--->DEQ2496---S/PDIF--->DCX2496---Balanced Analog XLR--->A500 Amps---> Speakers

Now... my problem is. I can't find a reasonably priced preamp that has digital inputs and outputs. Obviously, I want a good preamp that allows me to adjust the total volume of the system with one knob (or remote.. that would be nice). That's really all I'm using it for. So, something like the Grace M904b at $3200 seems a bit on the pricey side even though it's perfect for my application from a features standpoint.

Goals here are finding a preamp that allows me to connect my current source digitally and possibly ad other sources with digital outs in the future.

Any idears??

Thanks in advance!

Oops... made a mistake in my signal flow... connection between the DEQ2496 and DCX2496 is AES/EBU, not S/PDIF.

And now I found this:

http://www.minidsp.com/images/documents/miniDSP%2010x10%20User%20Manual.pdf

That would essentially be my preamp and take the place of both Behringer boxes. Wow... kind of a steal at $599.

Searching the forums now to find reviews. But that 10x10 HD looks perfect. Allows me to do everything I want to do, and offers expandability.

!

My idea would be to use a passive volume control in the analog domain inputs to the A500s. For openers there are high quality balanced passive volume controls on the market such as these:

- SM Pro audio Nano Patch

- TC Electronic

- NHT PVC

or do-it yourself with something fancy like a switched attenuator:

Linn Akurate DSM but probably a bit out of your budget. You could also look at Linn DS-I or DSM.

You don't need the DEQ2496 BTW. The DCX will do all EQ'ing. I would get the Dayton Omni Mic instead for RTA and adjust the DCX as needed.
