I watched it alone, late at night with nobody else home and cranked up to reference...........that did the trick! 
I don't know why but The Ring, which you mentioned above, remains one of the scariest movies I've seen - maybe simply because of its palpable sense of dread thoughout, the enigmatic child for whom I even have a certain empathy once we know all the backstory, the much above average score from Hans Zimmer, the imagery, the first-rate cast (except the annoying kid!)... Ghost Ship, although pretty standard, still has one of the most disturbing openings I've ever seen, The Shining still makes me feel uncomfortable
