WOW, very spooky.

I was expecting something very skin crawling and disturbing, but I thought that Red Band trailer was laughable and not scary in the slightest.

Count me as one of about 50% that was NOT impressed with this film. I didn't find it scary and was annoyed with the dark cinematography especially in scenes where it didn't belong. There was just something missing in the pace. I would suggest the director look at some Thai horror movies to make things work a little better and scarier.

Same here, what a waste of my time and let down. And to think that there was this thread on IMDB comparing this to Insidious and some thought that this was superior to Insidious. No way in hell is this better than Insidious in any way or form. Insidious was not perfect, the 2nd half was kinda cheesy and went a bit of course but overall James Wan created on the best scary ghost movie in this genre. Usually you can tell right away in the first 5 min the quality, the direction or how good it will be and this one I can right off the bat it was going to be a dud.

I'm def looking towards more from him like The Conjuring and Insidious 2 both I think due out later this summer.

I had it in my queue, but with all of negative comments I just removed it.

That's a good move, right now this month there's a ton of new releases that I even changed my plan to 3 out just keep up. You can always watch it later when there's nothing else to watch that's what I do with iffy movies since there's nothing else.

I'm disappointed, I was really looking forward to this one. I almost bought it yesterday but I went for Argo. Hopefully I made the right choice lol.... Seriously though, I wanted to blind buy Sinister after reading more than one good review on it... is it really that bad?

Me too. Most horror flicks get a day in court with me at some point.

Listening to the commentary I could tell the director is more of a technician than an auteur. He has some good ideas but I just don't think they came off right. He should try to "feel" more and rely on technique only when needed. The film just needed more of an "edge." His remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" didn't exactly win laudates.

Scared the $hit out of me! I watched it alone, late at night with nobody else home and cranked up to reference...........that did the trick! I loved the dark nature of the film which really added to the mood and the audio was well done and really pulled me into the film. Having said that, I would just give it a rent which will probably be enough.

Yeah it was really creepy. Highly disturbing footage, excellent soundtrack, and great scenes of contrast. Barely a drop of blood compared to the torture porn stuff and miles of dread. I wouldn't be upset if a copy landed in my collection but it is a strong rental. Quickest comparison would be The Ring but only loosely. I'm in the camp that liked Insidious and like this for similar reasons. It's a very good boogie man story.

Oh my..... sorry guys but I have to agree with General Kenobi here, this movie NEVER delivers. Huge letdown. Not really scary either by the way. Ethan Hawke's character is one selfish prick with nothing likeable whatsoever. I was 95% bored, 4.5% interested, and 0.5% *cough* scared. I don't know if I've seen too many of these but the "found footage" thing really starts to get old. The footage from The Ring is still creepier even after 11 years. While there *was* a few interesting moments, they were far too few in the middle of a story where nothing happens. The performances were fine though, and I guess that keeps the film from being a complete stinker. I'm glad I just rent it! Almost all that is interesting in this film is in the trailer.

I know what you mean.

I'm usually "scared" by movies that, I don't really know how to say it but let's say movies that "make me uncomfortable". There has to be something more than the usual (and often cheap) jump scare, regardless how effective it can be. Torture porn stuff like Saw and the likes are simply disgusting, but certainly not "scary". I did watched all of them but only because I wanted to know how the whole thing was going to end for Jigsaw and his "followers". The first one remains the best. Given that I also hate horror comedies and zombie flicks, there's not much left My favorite horror subgenre is the ghost stories, also I admit being very curious about the upcoming Evil Dead, which looks like a wild twisted ride so far. I was really looking forward to Sinister but it ended up very disappointing, considering a rather positive RT rating and good reviews (Ebert's "undeniably scary movie" quote escapes me though ). Next one on my list is Silent Hill Revelation which I'm going to watch tonight... I have low expectations here so maybe the end result won't be so bad I don't know why but The Ring, which you mentioned above, remains one of the scariest movies I've seen - maybe simply because of its palpable sense of dread thoughout, the enigmatic child for whom I even have a certain empathy once we know all the backstory, the much above average score from Hans Zimmer, the imagery, the first-rate cast (except the annoying kid!)... Ghost Ship, although pretty standard, still has one of the most disturbing openings I've ever seen, The Shining still makes me feel uncomfortable , the Exorcist not so much now... Oh well... sorry for the long diatribe, I'm just thinking out loud. Sinister could have been much better!

One movie I did think was absolutely horrible though that I watched last night was House at the End of the Street. One of the most awful movies I have seen in some time.

I enjoyed it, creepy and dark. Much better then House at the end of the street which I saw last weekend.

That being said. Yes I saw some stuff I really liked, how he keep gettin deeper and deeper before he was smart enough to get out.
Some items were put in for shock (loud bang) etc.
Decent renter over all.
