My old Sony receivers had 5.1 out. New ones seem lacking.

Do any of them still do this? I would love to pump hdmi in or optical in and have a single outs ..... So 1 set of wireless 5.1 headphones would work.

I have

Htpc hdmi
Ps3 hdmi
Xbox via optical

Suggestions???

AVRs that do have optical outputs cannot down convert HDMI--> optical, rather it would more likely only ouput the same optical input audio. You might want to consider connecting your HDMI sources to an HDMI switch.

THanks for the advice. The problem is that all the wireless headphones for 5.1/7.1 thats are high quality only take a SINGLE optical 5.1 or DTS (say the ASTRO http://www.astrogaming.com/)

As someone who enjoys sound, these are impressive. BUt....

My PS3 is HDMI -> Onk\yo HDMI
My XBOX is only Optical to get 5.1 (the HDMI on the new XBOX is PCM 2.0 only!!! - WTF)
My HTPC is 7.1 HDMI to my onko

All of this feeds my 70" Elite smile.gif

So....

I only want 1 set of 5.1 headphones! I can't figure otu a way since none of the wireless headphones had hdmi...

You can just simply hook up all your devices using SPDIF cables for audio like you did with your old Sony receiver. You can still hook up your PC and PlayStation 3 using HDMI for video.

Or you can get the Sony MDR-DS7500 wireless headphones which does work with HDMI.

So then take the optical output from the HDMI switch and pass it to an optical switch along with the optical output from the Xbox.
