So, since I'm gearing up to change my speaker setup soon, I wanted to sell my old speakers. Since I'm paranoid and slightly neurotic, if possible I'd like to avoid the craiglist/"strangers coming to my house and picking my speakers up" route. I was thinking ebay since I use them every so often to sell small electronics. The problem lies within shipping the damn things. I'm new to shipping large, heavy speakers.
The first speaker at hand is a B&W HTM61. The speaker weighs 35 pounds by itself. I have the original box, but for whatever reason it would appear that I did not have the foresight to save the original molded styrofoam packaging that holds the speaker in place in its box. The original box is approx. 26" in length, 17.5" width, and 13" in height. I'd plan on double-boxing it for sure, but I'm unsure how to pack the speaker inside its original carton to minimize risk of damage. It's fairly heavy, so I'm worried about it ripping through bubble wrap/packing materials, corners getting damaged, something coming loose...If it's best to leave the grill attached for shipping, etc. Perhaps my biggest concern is that the tweeter's dust cap is exposed and can be very easily pushed in.
Another concern is cost...with proper materials plus actual shipping cost, what ballpark should I be in? I know it will probably be moderately expensive, and i don't mind partially eating shipping costs, so I'd prefer to at least charge the buyer for partial shipping.
I'm hoping I can defer to those of you with experience shipping fragile speakers. Is it worth my while? Is it worth the hassle? Is there a simple way to do this? After typing this out, the craigslist method is sounding better and better.....
Thanks for reading, and I appreciate any help or advice in advance.
