"It's a plunderful life."

Film Synopsis:

Set sail for a fun-filled voyage and hilarious pirate antics with the biggest Band of Misfits on the seven seas! When the infamous Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) is shunned once again by his rivals Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz, he sets his sights to win the coveted Pirate of the Year Award! With his trusted dodo, Polly and rag-tag crew at his side, the Pirate Captain will need to battle a diabolical queen, save a young scientist and never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: Adventure!

My Take:

I threw in The Pirates! Band of Misfits with no knowledge to what lied ahead, other than it was an animated kids flick. After the first 15 minutes I said to myself that its like a cross between "Chicken Run" and "Monty Python" but with pirates. Low and behold it is by Peter Lord, a Brit who is director and co-founder of the Academy award-winning Aardman Animations Studio. Aardman Animations are responsible for the creation and Claymation of Chicken Run, Wallace and Grommet as well as Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer video (1986). I enjoyed the misadventures of the Pirate Captain and his crew of buffoons as they work to try to win the coveted Pirate of the Year award for the captain. However, don't expect anything groundbreaking or even original as it is just cute enough, just funny enough and just short enough to be decent family fodder with no real offensive elements. My son wanted to see it again right after it finished and that is recommendation enough that little kid will dig it.

Parental Guide:

Mild action, rude humor and some language

The Pirates! Band of Misfits comes to Blu-ray disc from Sony featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 24.2 mbps Dolby TrueHD MA 5.1 lossless surround sound that has a average bitrate of 3.3 mbps.

I fell like its my first time. Really, this is the first perfect score that I have awarded any of my reviews. The Pirates! Band of Misfits gets a 100 for Video, as it is an absolutely stellar release from Sony. Fine details are crystal clear on foreground as well as background imagery, and the depth of field is superb. Colors are extremely vivid and life-like for for an animated feature. Combine all of that with top-tier black levels with perfect shading and an over-all image with no compression artifacts and you can see clearly why this was awarded a 100. The DTS-HD MA track is quite impressive as well, with a big and convincing sound stage that is treated with sonic goodies like intense LFE from crashing waves to subtle perfection in the sibilance of its crystal clear and accurately placed dialogue. Enjoy!

Bonus Features:

  • Commentary with Director Peter Lord, Co-Director Jeff Newitt and Editor Justin Krish

  • (HD) From Stop to Motion

  • (HD) Featurettes Creating the Bath Chase Sequence

  • (HD) Pirate Disguise Dress-Up Game

  • (HD) Peter Lord Short Films

  • (HD) So You Want To Be A Pirate? Short Film

  • DVD Copy

  • Ultra Violet Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

Don't expect a Pixar or even Dreamworks story with depth and substance for us adults out of The Pirates! Band of Misfits. But that's OK as it's fun, light and enjoyable fare for kids and the family. With amazing A/V quality, over an hour of special features, a DVD as well as Digital Copy; Parents and kids alike with get their mileage out of this nice release from Sony Blu-ray.

I was taken by surprise by this one as I was not expecting much. Turned out to be quite a decent movie and its no surprise that Sony once again did a stellar job on the video as well as the audio. I thought the audio on this release was outstanding. It packed quite a punch which caught me by surprise as well.
