You can read my other post if you want to see the full story, but, basically, I had a hard time getting the picture to look good and was never able to get decent sound from the TV. The picture looks good now and I've ordered an external amplifier and speakers that should help with the sound. So, while I'm still annoyed that I had to go to all that trouble and expense when it should have worked right out-of-the-box, I'm okay with the TV now.

My remaining problem is that the TV's remote doesn't work to control the Blu-Ray player and I don' t like the player's touch-pad remote. I'm considering returning the player to get one with a regular remote, but only want to go to the trouble to do that if the TV's remote will correctly control the new player. Does anyone have the ET5 and a Panasonic Blu-Ray player (with a real remote) that can verify that you can control the player through the TV's remote?

Thanks.

Edit: I received the Panasonic SC-HTB20 "Audio System" today and it works ... sometimes. I hooked it up using the HDMI "ARC" connection on the TV. I went through the menus to enable Viera Link and, usually, I can control the amp's volume using the TV remote. And, usually, it works when I change inputs on the TV. But, often it doesn't produce any sound or it doesn't work until I use it's remote to change the input.

It appears that the "Viera Link" functionality isn't working right. I'm going to try replacing the HDMI cables, even though I have decent ones, just because I can't think of anything else to try. If I can't get it working soon, I'm sending everything back.

Edit Again: New cables didn't help. Viera Link doesn't work. Panasonic support is no help. UPS is coming tomorrow to pickup the TV. Blu-Ray player, and speakers for return to the seller.

-- Roger

You can buy the DMP-BDT220 remote from the Panasonic website cheap, it's a normal remote, and works with the 320.

We just got this TV a few days ago... we had bought a Panasonic Plasma first, but after reading about the fact that there are still "burn-in" issues, and talking to Panasonic about it, we decided to take the Plasma back and got this one. I did have to do quite a bit more tweaking on the picture, but we are really happy with it now...

I have a question if anyone knows about this... we have an older Kenwood receiver (with the whole surround system) with no optical jack (or HDMI, obviously). I've been reading about some kind of decoder that I can buy to make my stereo work with this TV (or any new TV for that matter). Panasonic did tell me they are out there, but some work and others don't.

Have any of you bought one of these and got it to work properly? And if so, where did you buy it? I checked Radio Shack, Best Buy, because I wanted to buy local in case it didn't work, but they don't have it, so I will probably have to order it from amazon.

any advice would be appreciated...

It's time for a new receiver. A new 7.1 reciever will do 3D, deep color, pass through, and be compatible with HDMI 1.4. And you'll have your optical output. Prices are relatively cheap for an entry level receiver with these features. Go for it.

Just placed an order for the 55" model.

I'm returning a 55" Panasonic UT50 series plasma to Amazon in exchange for this. The plasma buzzed a lot on bright scenes, and a service visit wasn't able to quiet it down to my liking. I'd also started getting annoyed by some IR (watch a lot of ESPN, play games etc.), so I'm guessing the LED set will be more to my liking as I'm not that finicky about black levels etc. as I'm not a huge videophile.

Should get the new set early next week (Monday is the estimate, but will have to wait for the call to set up appointment to confirm).
What is IR? Infra Red? I think you will enjoy this TV. I certainly did.
Image retention.

i.e. when you play games or watch ESPN/CNN etc. for a long time the channel logos, life bars and other things in game HUDs get stuck on the screen for a while afterwards. Honestly, I could have lived with that as the times I got some IR it went away in no more than a couple hours of watching other full screen content. Still annoying, but manageable. The buzzing on bright scenes is what I couldn't deal with. Not having to worry about IR is also nice though as I like having ESPN or CNN on as background noise when working at home, and not having to worry about how long I play games etc.

It will also be nice to have a screen that's ok in a bright room. I had the UT50 plasma which is glossy and has no filters so I had to keep the blinds down for it to be watchable at all during the day. Again, not a huge deal since I can control lighting, but I live on the 21st story and have a great view so it kind of stinks having the blinds down so much.

So yeah, while I may not like some aspects of the picture as well as the plasma (i.e. dark scenes) I think LED is more up my alley for my uses and pet peeves about displays. I was leaning toward LED when I started shopping around and would have got this set first if it was on sale for the current price ($960) when I started. I took a chance on the plasma since it was on sale for $850. I was worried about buzz and IR as I'd tried a Vizio plasma back in 2007 or so and returned it for those reasons. But I hoped tech had improved, and that Panny is a better brand. But I guess I just have bad luck with buzzing--or I'm more sensitive to hearing it that the average person--and my uses aren't great for plasma in IR terms since it's a lot of gaming and watching channels with tickers.

Have had this TV for a couple months now. My overall impression is that it is a very good TV but far from perfect. I originally bought the TV back on Black Friday but had to exchange it for a new one because the first one I got had really bad flashlighting in the lower corners of the TV. The new one is better, no real flashlighting unless the screen is completely black and even then it's nowhere near as bad as the first set I had. However, there is an area in the lower center part of the screen which is brighter than the rest of the TV in dark scenes. It's not too bad but it is noticeable. I've played with the settings some and really need to some more but so far I haven't found anything that makes dark scenes in movies with this TV look very good. It's not awful but it just isn't good either. The 3D is quite impressive, I'm not that interested in 3D but it does a good job with it. The overall picture of the TV is excellent, especially in brighter scenes. The sound is nothing special but it's not bad for a flat screen TV. The included apps are alright, having a Netflix button right on the remote is nice but it and all of the other apps feel sluggish compared to our Roku. The remote is solid, though I don't like the fact that it doesn't have a guide button to access the guide of what's coming up on over-the-air TV stations. Overall, pleased with the TV, it's nice for the price and there are times when I'm amazed by how good it looks but there's also times when I'm surprised by how poor the picture looks. If great black levels are important to you, this probably isn't the TV for you but if it isn't a priority and 3D is, it's a great TV.

Can anyone tell me where the setting is to turn off the motion interpolation on my L55ET5? I hate the "soap opera" effect but can't find how to turn this off. Thanks!

It should be in advance picture adjustment. If I remember right you have the basic adjustment and if you scroll to the bottom of that it will bring up advance. It has 4 settings off, weak, mid and strong. Out of the box it is usually set to strong.

Surprised by lack of activity in this thread. Surely more than a few took advantage of the recent price drop on these sets.

I jut bought it for $899 at Frys. Will probably be delivering in the next few days.

Hoping to get one with no issues ( hate the whole drill of talking to customer care and going through the painful return processes)

Mine is doing fine. Has not burn up and caught on fire yet. I like it except for the sound. It is fine for normal stuff. Like a thin TV set, speaker is a problem. I use my computer speaker w subwoofer.

Hardly use the 3D and internet feature.

I sure love the price!

I've had mine for going on 3 weeks. Got Amazon to match the Fry's $899 price on the 55" model.

I'm loving it. No problems whatsoever. Think the picture is great (as noted above, the black levels aren't great--but not a lot of my watching has dark scenes) but everything else looks great to me--both 2D and 3D.

I like it a ton more than the 55" Panny UT50 plasma I sent back as the better blacks weren't worth not being able to use my TV normally due to IR (hours of ESPN every day, long gaming sessions etc.)--I'm not changing my usage habits to fit a TV's flaws--and loud buzzing on bright scenes.

We finally rented a 3D movie (Hotel Transylvania) to really test out the 3D and I was quite impressed. It added to the experience without being bothersome (other 3D has bothered my eyes some but this didn't). Planning on definitely renting 3D movies more often.

How were you able to use your computer speakers with subwoofer? I would like to use my Logitech z623 with this but it only has the TosLink audio out.

Just got this TV (55") and so far its great, but I was wondering if you all could help me with something. I have hardwood floors and when the kids run around past the TV I can see it wobble somewhat. I can push on it and make it wobble a little up and down on the side and back and forth a little as well. Does yours do this as well? My last TV was a 47LG50 and it didn't wobble at all. I checked the stand screws and they all were pretty tight. Its quite a bit bigger and thinner than the LG, just making sure this is normal. Thanks.

Yes it's normal. Most of these type of TV's do this, regardless of brand. Some are better than others but the wobble is usually there when stand mounted. Mount in on the wall, problem solved.

The only thing I did to mine was to choose the default "Standard" settings and bring the back lighting down to 65. And make sure you turn off the auto sensor. This gives me a nice bright picture with good blacks and bright whites.

I am NOT a fan of professional calibration. To me, after calibration, the picture usually appears dark and dingy. And the "pop" is gone. Yes, I know that's how is "supposed" to look but to me it looks worse after calibration. Then again, it's a matter of personal preference.

I think that's my problem. I did some professional setting and I was watching Cinderella man and it was so dark it was upsetting me. These pro settings do seen to dull the image for the casual viewer, albeit more realistic, but making me feel regretful for the tv I just bought. Maybe I will give the standard setting with the backlight to 65 some time to adjust and see how that goes.

Sorry I had not been paying much attention to this thread. I use my computer soundcard and stretch my 2 speakers and subwoofer next to my TV and PC. I only do this if I watch music show. Other than that, I just use the TV speaker.

Ya I just don't understand why there are no settings posted yet
post #85 of 96
Hello.

I am using the stock setting that was on my TV.

The only thing that I change was to bring down the brigthness. It hurt my eyes.

Give it a few days as your eyes get adjusted to it.

The factory setting comes very good already.

The 5GHz wireless in this TV is very good. We used the VUDU app and rented an HDX movie. I was blown away by the picture and sound (on my receiver). Never once did it freeze, drop, pixelate or anything. The VIERA app UI s*cks and so do the ads but I can look past that. I just wish there was a way to turn off the screensaver that spins everything around. It makes me feel a bit sick to my stomach.

I just picked up the L55-ET5 yesterday. I got it from a local Best Buy, Open Box for $776. GREAT price on a 55" passive 3D set, and of course right now I love it. smile.gif I'll have to read around on the thread to play with settings, and I'll be sure to post again later when I've had more time with the set. But for right now it's up on the wall, and looks beautiful. I tested the Dark Knight Rises Blu Ray last night and it looked phenomenal. Very happy camper!

I picked the 55" at Best Buy for $856. Set replaced a 50" Panny Plasma that went elsewhere. So far so good, still trying to figure out what all the different picture settings so hopefully someone more knowledgeable will post something. Sound could be better, but we watched some 3D stuff on demand and was really surprised how well the passive 3D stuff works.

Just picked this set up from Amazon PM for $799...it was replacing a Panasonic TH50PZ850U - which was a great set. My first impressions are that the picture is nice and clear, colors are good, blacks are good enough for me. The only thing I noticed right off the bat is the flashlighting, I put on a 1080p movie through a PS3 and the upper left corner is crazy bright compared to the rest of the panel, and near the lower right has the same issue. During full color and lighter scenes it isn't noticeable at all.

I'm not all that picky, and I can deal with a little uneven lighting, but this is crazy that people deal with this. I'm going to give it a week or two and see if it gets better or if I stop noticing it...my 50PZ850U had no such issue...and I figured a mid range LED set from 2012/13 would have move figured out than a higher end 2007/08 plasma would. Good thing I got it from Amazon.

Mine is running great, its on all the time and never a hiccup. Very pleased with it, just need to add more sound. Its not my main HT set, so maybe a sound bar will do...need to do some research.
