"Double the action. Double the terror. Double the D's."

Film Synopsis:

Prepare for double the action, double the terror and double the D’s. The prehistoric school of bloodthirsty piranhas are back and this time, no one is safe from the flesh-eating fish as they sink their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of summer’s best attraction, The Big Wet Water Park.

My Take:

Piranha 3DD is a terrible film; Abysmal really, but that's what they were going for. If you watch this and criticize it for being low budget, lowbrow and cheesy, then Director John Gulager and the writing team of Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan and Joel Soisson can look at each other, high five and say "Goal Accomplished!". So if you are going to watch this, don't expect Knighted Thespians and dramatic prose. Be warned and quit your whining!

If you were not paying attention, this sequel to 2010s Piranha 3D is called Piranha3 DD. DD, get it? It certainly ups the ante of boobaliciousness, as it takes place in an "adult" swim park, brilliantly run by the always hysterical David Koechner (Anchorman). Besides the fact that he has made this family water-park an adult theme behind the back of his 49% partner, who happens to be his Stepdaughter (Danielle Panabaker), there rally isn't much in the way of plot here. This is flick is purely a vehicle for blood, jokes, boobs and Hoffs. Yes Hoffs, as in David Hasselhoff who is perfectly self-deprecating. The word on the street is the sub-par CGI Piranha are re-used (even reused shots) from the first flick, but I didn't notice a thing. This was 80 minutes of mind-numbing schlock and I had fun with it. Possibly more fun than the original which was pretty darn intentionally cheesy and gory itself. Bottom line is if you liked the first this will be a fun, quick and dirty watch.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for strong violence, language, sexual content, idiocracy, blood and mucho boobage.

Piranah DD comes to Blu-ray Disc from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC (2D) encoded video that has an average bitrate of 22.9 Mbps, 1080p MVC (3D) encoded video, and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Sound that has an average bitrate of 3.8 mbps

Anchor Bay releases Piranha 3DD as 3D, 2D, DVD and Digital Copy all in one package. Pretty cool for fans, and I am glad to report the releases quality is great. The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Soundtrack is pretty awesome. It's an aggressive track, and far from elegant, with its thunderous LFE and widely active surrounds. The tracks dynamics are impressive (check out Ving Rhames gun shots) and the mix is on the money, especially in the big attack scene when Piranha are darting in and out from all over the screen. The 2D is reference, and might even have be awarded a few more points other than its over blown colors. They work, add some fun to the blood, but are a bit too much for my liking. Blacks are stellar, as are shadow details, and add that to perfectly rendered definition on ever frame and this is a absolute winner. The 3D was not as great, with the same colors, decent light output, but something was off for me. I felt uncomfortable, and squinted a bit. As for reference I checked my set-up with a few other 3D flicks and it wasn't as bad as this. I did settle in, however it took me a bit longer than usual with 3D content. The flicks credits flew off the screen with amazing depth, and there were shots that the on-screen depth was quite impressive, but over-all the 3D medium was not used the best I have seen. Also, I expected a whole lot more in the way of DDs popping off the screen and almost hitting me in the face--color me disappointed.

Bonus Features:

  • Filmmakers Feature Commentary

  • (HD) The Story Behind the DD

  • (HD) The Hofftastic World of David Hasselhoff

  • (HD) Busey’s Bloopers

  • (HD) Wet and Wild with David Koechner

  • (HD) "A Lesson with John McEnroe" – A Dimension Short Film

  • DVD Copy

  • Digital Copy

Final Thoughts:

The lowbrow schlock of Piranha 3D is taken up a notch here, but what little plot the original had is taken down a notch as well. This is pure camp and bad for the sake of sometimes bad is fun. I enjoyed the mindless 80 minutes and genre fans will as well. Take it light and enjoy the great high definition package Anchor Bay has put together. I found the Director/Writers commentary a perfect companion to let us know how they felt about making it a goofy-cheese ride, even going so far as to joke on the may underwater segue shots. And for a perfect bit of levity, check out the Gary Busey Bloopers.

I will give this one a rent. Hopefully I can get my hands on the 3D version as Blockbuster will have a 3D Blu-ray copy of this movie.

Was hoping this one would be as fun as the first, but not even close.

First one I'd probably give 3-3 1/2 stars. The first one is actually a movie I would watch again.

This one, 1 star. I wouldnt watch it again.

(OK, I lied. I'd probably fast forward to the boob scenes every now and then)

No, this movie I will not watch it again!

Thanks for taking the time to review this for us, Lee!

The first one was so hugely disappointing, that I probably won't even consider spending time or money on this one...

This one actually has a lot less gore and boobage than the first one. Major disappointment, because it fails to deliver. The first was much better. In saying this, I'll probably pick up the BD anyway. biggrin.gif

I would not either. The story is ordinary and ridiculous. mad.gif
