Weird alarm with APC J10 battery backup

I've had an APC J10 since around 2006 and it's alarm just went off, its screen indicating "int. battery overtemp.". I powered the unit down and re-started it - the system did a self-test and now all is apparently well. This seems odd at best. Should I be concerned?

Probably not. Yet at least. It sounds like it was doing it's job. If it continues, probably need a new battery or new ups.

I have used many small APC UPS systems at work. Yours is 6 years old and I sure would expect the battery to be at the end of it's life expectancy. Should not hurt to keep using it but I expect you will start to get more alarms in the near future. It is possible to order new batteries for it. Do a Google search on the model number to see what the cost would be.

The batteries on the APC units generally last about 4 or 5 years; it's time for a new one. Just go to the APC website to order.

Thanks, everyone. I'll order a new battery. In the meantime, would it be best to power the unit down and simply not use it?

Update: the machine has been powered down (turned off) since last night, just to be safe, and the alarm went off again just now, in spite of the unit being turned off (but not unplugged)! Should I just remove the battery now and leave the unit empty and unplugged until I can get a replacement?

Either or. Without battery it is just a surge protector.
