YAPTAR. Yet Another Pleading Thread About Remotes.

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to read this:

I am a DIYer who has assembled a passable HT along with some random home automation controls. I have my house lights (all Zwave) running off a Vera box, and WAS running my home theater off a Logitech 890 before the inherent battery charging defect made it die a slow death.

Upon replacing the remote I discovered the 900 did not control zwave and all my HT lighting is zwave. All the components with the exception of my projector (Panny 7000) are in a cabinet. Here is a list of items to control:

1. Onkyo 3009
2. PS3
3. HD-DVD player
4. WD Live Media Streaming Device
5. Zwave lights

I have researched the heck out of an elegant solution but it seems none exist. I have the ps3 / harmony dongle, but with Logitech no longer including zwave I would be stuck with multiple remotes. I can get my hands on a cheap(er?) android tablet so I am leaning in that direction in combination with one of the multitude of IR blaster thingies (square connect etc.) but there is very little on the android side and I don't want to drop a thousand dollars just to make it sing together.

I get the impression I have the raw ingredients with the vera but the Ps3 is a bit of a crimp as without additional (limited functionality) IR dongles it can't be controlled except by Sony's proprietary bluetooth.

Help?

***Edit - While I was plunking away on the keys I thought that one option is to pick up a discrete blu-ray player as that is the primary function of the Ps3 - but my early experiences with the players is that they were incredibly slow to power up and load. Has this been fixed?***

Hi, have you researched the Home Theater Remote by GE, model 45608? They are discontinued but are still readily available, that may be what you are looking for, it is a learning remote that can directly support Z-Wave and is part of the GE/Jasco lineup of Z-Wave Home Automation products so is completely compatible with other zwave products as well as Vera.

As far as controlling the ps3 via IR. I am not an expert with the ps3 but have you considered an IR receiver and PC software to control everything and do some customization. I have used IR remotes quite extensively, albeit a few years ago, and I have done some pretty amazing things with IR controls and a PC. Do you have a PC as part of your HT setup?

Anyways, just wanted to put in my two cents, I am always happy to help when I can. Feel free to reply or email me if I can help further.

for the PS3, get either the Schmartz Solutions IR to Bluetooth or the Audio Authority Bluebeam (IR to bluetooth) device. This will receive IR signals from your master remote, and output b/t on the back end to control the PS3. Both have all the controls available to you on the Sony Bluetooth remote, so I don't know what you mean about "limited functionality" dongles. I have the AA Bluebeam and it does everything I need it to. Whatever remote you choose should have one of those devices in its code library.

I did solve my problem:

Bought an IR bluray player.
Bought the Square Connect IR blaster.
Bought a second hand Ipad to control the mess.

I must say that I am quite impressed with the seamless integration on the Square connect software and the Vera.
