Hmmm ? All my 3D BR testing was done on that which I commented about

EDIT - I clarified in the file testing for Blu ray that it applied to 2D and 3D. Seamless branching and forced subtitles applied to both 2D and 3D testing.

Anything else you feel might not be clear?

You mention 3D mkv files - not 3D BD ISO tests. I also edited/added to my post:

3D BD ISO files including Disney titles, etc.

It would be helpful to mention/link the NMJ Tookit that's widely used by people to quickly/easily update their NMJ via the computer. I'm with you on NMJ -I don't like how it looks so I'm using evZap and getting ready to use some Legion skins and People mods.

I did edit my test to mention 3D BD ISO ("BluRay Folder/ISO (entire disc, both 2D and 3D) " and "Forced Subtitles in a BluRay Structure (2D and 3D) ". The seamless branch portion in particular applies to Disney. In the network performance section I talked a little more about 3D BR ISOs and performance. What made 3D BR ISOs difficult to test is they don't play properly over smb (so hard to dig in to when from the start you are getting the loading circle every 10 seconds). I ended up throwing a few of the 3D BR ISOs on attached storage so I could confirm they could in fact play. I can gladly expand on this a little further

Good idea with the NMJ Toolkit. I will get the link posted in the review

Ah, when I was looking around on NMT I didn't see that thread. I will update my review for that right. Big thanks for pointing out

mkv w/ 1080p internal IDX/SUB subtitles (FAIL)
(disabled since last firmware, because of issues, external ones work)

mkv w/multiple SSA subtitles – subtitles are not displayed properly (FAIL)
(you have Subtitle color at Auto? if not is that the FAIL you mean that position is not correct? because with Auto they work here or what do you mean?)
Does the dual core processor really make a noticeable difference in overall responsiveness and speed? In terms of usability how much of an improvement can I expect from the Sigma dual core CPU?

Makes sense, thought I had tested it with an earlier fw and it worked. Obviously with the fw I used for testing though it is a fail

I was given an mkv ssa file to test that uses various colors and placement of the subtitles. All I get with the PCH is just one of the subtitle lines which just sits at the bottom of the screen. I did not touch any of the subtitle settings, so whatever is default with the A400 is what was used. So the settings should be changed?

Thanks - since you went through the exercise of making that review I thought I'd help illuminate some areas that I know people want to know about - 3D BD ISO playback (network and locally stored). I have had issues w/playback via local storage but I haven't tried since the new firmware and I've ripped @6 3D BD ISO movies to test out over the next few days so I'll be posting feedback at that forum.

Interesting. The only issues I encountered with local storage (USB 2.0 external drive) were Disney movies b/c of the seamless branch. However, I am going off the last round of tests with the current FW. Previous to that I had a lot more issues with Blu Ray 3Ds via local storage because of the DTS(MA) bug (which was fixed since). Was the seamless branch + DTS(MA) bug possibly the issues you had?

That better not be the case we worked hard with the 200 series and 300 series to get almost perfect ASS/SSA subtitle playback Im going to test this when I get home. If they removed the good ASS/SSA stack i will be pissed

Hopefully it is just a setting that needs to be changed. I will upload the ssa file that was sent to me for testing so you can give it a whirl

Actually, I still have the link from when the file was sent to me:

I will test with all my old files as well that we got playback working with, If is bad I will plea to the pch gods to add the good engine back in. We had the 200/300 displaying all the colors, all the position tags even if text was displayed vertical, only thing that did not work was karaoke effects

I didn't find it specifically in this thread, but can the PCH A-400 (or any of the Popcorn devices) play full album FLAC music files with CUE support? I'm looking for something that can do that, as almost any device will handle my other needs (MKV, MP4 video, etc).

Thank you for the review on the 400. This device is a MEDIA play, not just a movie player. Why did you not review how it handles audio files and photo files as well?

Well aware that it is a MEDIA player, thanks for clarifying wink.gif My reviews are as is simply b/c that is all I use the media player for. I would prefer to keep my reviews focused on how I use, in particular b/c my reviews are based on real world use (i.e using it for a variety of playback during the testing period for personal use, not just simply trying a few file types and writing a review based off of that). I have no desire to use this type of media player for music or photos, and feel that focusing on video playback allows me to give a more detailed and accurate review in that area (instead of just testing a few music/photo samples and giving the thumbs up just based off of that). Especially since my reviews are done wherever I can find free time (which is not a whoel lot these days), it makes it that much easier to focus on the areas that I use. Hope that makes sense. I understand that means my reviews aren't as complete as some people would like, but I hope by now most people who read my reviews know that my focus is on the video side (playback and UI).

Is plenty good for me. I only use them for video playback. Don't really care for anything else.

I think your reviews are even more detailed on what average user will ever use, and honest too, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the review. I understand your decision to stick with video in your reviews.

But I share Mlknez's frustration that no one is forthcoming with opinions on music or photos with this and other new devices. The questions are asked, but there are never any answers. I think I understand why the manufacturers put so little effort into music and photos: Most customers simply don't care.

Undoubtedly music and photos get pushed to the side. Maybe the thought is that is such a small portion of the potential consumer base when it comes to these types of media players (or as you say most customers simply don't care)? I know myself personally I use a dedicated music solution (Sonos) for music playback and don't want to use a device that relies on a TV or my AVR being on for music.

Really, I think the solution would be for someone who cares about these areas to do their own reviews. For example, why not have Mlknez but together his own review focusing on these two areas. This would help spotlight features/shortcomings, and possibly get the attention of the manufacturers or the community

I agree, that would be a good solution. I can't speak for Mlknez, but for myself, I can't see spending what it costs just to review the music features. And what would I do with the unit once I realize how poorly it handles music? Dump it on eBay at a loss?

I know that many reviewers are comped units from the manufacturer for their reviews, but it's unlikely a manufacturer would do that for a music review when 1) it is such a small market and 2) it is likely to review poorly. I would be willing to review a player for music if someone was willing to send me one, but I can't justify paying for an A-400 when I'm fairly certain it won't be any better than my Neo-550.
