The first thing that got my attention is the case, the Dune have the cheapest plastic case I ever see. I know it change nothing to the picture quality but it does give a cheap look to my Home theatre ring
The Popcorn A400 case are made from metal and it's a Silverstone design so look and feel a bit more high end.
I know Dune also made the Base 3D, if I choose to stay with Dune, i think I will go for that machine as the case look to be made of metal. Can someone confirm this?
Ok now the real thing, the picture quality :
For everything below 1080p, no contest, the Popcorn Hour have the best picture quality. So if someone have a lot of DVD rip or they download a lot of 720p tv show or movies from internet, the A400 thanks to is VXP chip have the best picture quality. I did a lot of test with that type of content on my 108 inchs screen and there's no contest, the A400 is better
For everything that is 1080p (aka blu ray rip) the picture quality is about the same. No real difference here. The picture quality of the Dune is great and better than the realtek player I was using before.
The only thing in favor of the A400 in 1080p is that the VXP setting are still available and can enhance the picture quality perception. There two setting : one call Highlight and the other one Shadow. They can help to give a more 3D look on some flat transfert (poor blu ray upconvert). But this is for sure not "director intent" so a more subjective appreciation.
As for the stability, the Dune is way more stable and ready to rock than the Popcorn Hour. The A400 has made giant leap in the right direction but there still some bugs here and there. As for the Dune, is's almost a flawless experience.
On the Jukebox side, on the Dune I install Zappiti and was really impress by this Jukebox, the graphics are great and the Jukebox work really well without any bugs. The new NMJ on the A400 is great too but still have some littles bugs here and there.
Thats it for now, I will continu to do more testing this week-end and report back at a later time...
