Samsungs have gone downhill in quality, dont know if Id buy another

Samsungs arent the same quality they once were 3 or 4 years ago. I used to own 3 Samsung tvs (one from 2005, other from 2007 and 2009). The quality was amazing, no problems. But in the past 2 years, especially since they started pushing out razor thin LEDs with pratically no bezel, all the issues started coming up and fast. Ghosting, backlight bleed, clouding, this whole panel lottery they started in 2010 is just stupid and unacceptable business practice.

The panel lottery was going on before the 2010 model year. IMO Samsung has never been a brand known for their great reliability, rather great design and good picture quality (arguably, picture quality is in decline).

these problems you mention have long been a problem with their panels, Sony TV's that had the same panels in them also had the flashlight and cloudy black picture issues.

the root of the problem is the type of LCD display it is that is the problem. xVA type panels have the LC's aligned in such a position that any amount of pressure on the display will cause them to "open" allowing more light to pass through. a good way to see this in action on your xVA screen is to put up a black screen and simply tap on it gently, xVA type LCD's will give off a large white halo of light around the area you tapped on them. go do the same thing to an IPS or TN panel (pc monitors are usually TN panels) and you will only see light appear where you press directly rather than all around that area of pressure. the reason for it is the alignment of the LC's are completely different than VA type panels

Samsung got where they were by building the brightest set in the store. The flashlighting and clouding of current sets just doesn't show up in overlit showrooms with candy/neon bright source material.

The other thing that garnered them a lot of attention was their motion enhancers, back 3-4+ years ago theirs was one of the only ones that worked very well and was very adjustable.

They also fooled customers by giving store models with "S" panel (Samsung panels) while they did a switch-and-bait tactic by using cheaper and inferior panels in the same model.
So thinking you get the "nice" looking set at store.... well you get a different one at home.

PANEL LOTTERY!

Unfortunately, I must agree...I have the A850 (2008 model, bought in 2009) and needed repairs.

I looked at the current avaliable models and none,

not LCD, LED-backlit, LED-edgelit or Plasma Samsung could match the old A850's killer picture.

I believe the Sharp patent lawsuit destroyed Samsung's advances in Picture Quality.

3D and Smart TV/Apps also took the focus off its once superior Picture Quality.
