AVS Forum Follow Us Contest: Win a Copy of 'Bond 50,' the Complete 23-disc James Bond Blu-ray Set - Page 2

Anyone who believes that they have any sort of privacy or rights outside of facebook is seriously deluding themselves. +1 for those who are tired of whiners complaining about lack of privacy as an excuse for not purchasing online, not using facebook, heck, why are you using AVS?

While I dislike contests that cater only to specific groups (or countries), it is the prerogative of the company or association holding the contest to offer it to whomever they like. It is "free", ergo, those who don't win or refuse to enter have no right to complain. Or I guess they do have a right to complain, but nobody has to listen.

I for one have thrown my name in the hat and am more than happy to have less competition in the proverbial pot.

What's facebook??

Is it a book about faces at Amazon?

Setting the Facebook debate aside, I note that the value is reported as $299. Therefore, should we assume that the blu-ray boxed set is a US edition and possibly region locked?

FB is nuts! why put all your life up for the world to see? Plus, I wanted to enter a contest and was denied, all because I refuse to give them info. My son is convinced they track your net moves and use it to sell you stuff. I will never be part of this insanity!

Yup, won't be entering this contest I suppose being a follower of the forum isn't enough.

Someone at AVSF decided to start a contest to strengthen the status of AVSF which has it's own Facebook page. If you don't like FB don't use it. But also don't go after the organizers of the contest telling them they are evil. Tell them they need to create another contest for non-FB users. I doubt it will be able to generate the prize offered by this one.

:mad:I fully agree. Please AVSF create a contest for Non-Facebook users.

You son is right. Tracking is a part of using the web. But surfing the web using your ISP just tracks where you go and what you see so that they can send you targeted ads. Once you 'like' something on facebook, you open the door to allowing them to aggregate your data. Not that anyone reads the fine print, but if one does, they tell you straight out:

In addition to PII, additional information may be collected, such as system information, browser type (e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer), IP address, the type of operating system you are using (e.g., Windows XP or Mac OS), what version of Adobe Flash you are using (e.g., Flash 9.0), CPU type (e.g. Pentium), your manner of connecting to the Internet (e.g., connection speed through narrowband or broadband access), information about your geographic location, and the domain name of your Internet service provider. We also track some of the pages that you visit on our Website through the use of pixel tags (also called clear gifs). This tracks usage information about users who have received targeted promotional campaigns. In addition, SnapApp uses third-party service provider partners to employ anonymous cookies for accounting and data integrity purposes.

Other sources: We may receive information about you from other sources, including publicly available information or information available from third party sources, such as updated delivery and address information from our carriers or third parties, and add it to our account information, generally for updating purposes. We may also obtain information about you through optional co-registration and/or advertisements on sites operated by third parties.

Enter this (or any contest on the web) and you are basically allowing this 'and associated companies' to start their own file on you.

Of course, this if off the subject of the contest, but its a reality of trying to win. One will win the DVD's but the company mining the data will win with every entry.

Yes. I know. My point was tho that people enter what seems to be innocent contests without realizing you are giving away more rights.
Start with a simple forum of AVS...now to enter the contest you have to fake 'Like' them on Facebook, which in turn gives 3 other companies the right to track your data. Its not so much that public data is out there. The 'fine print' basically says not only can you pull the public data but I allow you to track me going forward and start a file on me...which in turn you can sell to someone else. People don't realize what the fake 'Like' on Facebook (or any other web contest) opens the door to.

Or just don't care as it happens everywhere else. Websites you visit, registrations, privacy is a thing of the past. Unless you live off the grid in a log cabin lol. I am happy for everyone who will not enter so I can get this awesome Bond set. My trade off? A few ads, big deal. Its not like FB is going to assume my identity, kill me, replace me with some bizzarro version of myself to fuel its self aware need to grow lol.

As if I'd ever open a Facebook account :/

I also aggree with the Facebook negativity. I don't even have a Facebook account, nor will I ever.

But, I also suggest a solution. Doubtful for this contest, but hopefully useful for future ones.

AVSForum should sign up for a Diaspora account. The open-source, privacy-centered alternative to Facebook (and even Google+). Why put all of your eggs in one tainted basket (Facebook)?

Read up on it at http://blog.diasporafoundation.org

I don't have any affiliation, I just know it's a much better up & coming alternative to Facebook.

What's facebook?

I know there is something named Facebook that that AV Science Forum and AV Science Sales use. I went to the library to check it out but the librarian looked at me like she was going to call the police, so I left before I could read it. Being an old dog, I can't learn a new trick. For that matter, I am just getting used to my new email machine.

I also refuse to "enter contests" or post anything via the scourge that is Facebook. Facebook is nothing but a personal DATA-MINING scam. Besides that, EVERYTHING YOU POST ON Facebook becomes THEIR PROPERTY, THEY OWN EVERYTHING you post and it becomes their copyrighted material to do with as THEY PLEASE (yes I am yelling, because their "fine print" policies are so damnable)! To make matters worse, Facebook recently purchased outright the company making the second best facial recognition software on the entire planet. Their facial recognition software is so good, it is scary. So Facebook has access to your face and the faces of all of the "friends" pictures you have unwittingly posted, coupled with your name address, e-mail address and phone number and the same info for ALL of your "friends". Facebook then keeps track of everything you watch, everything you listen to, everywhere you go and EVERYTHING you post connected with Facebook and all of that material and information is permenantly stored and made available for sale or access to governments around the world and to the highest bidder! Talk about "Big Brother" and a total loss of any and all privacy! One example of how intrusive Facebook is; prospective employers are now demanding job applicants provide them with their Facebook account password information so that they can use EVERYTHING THERE to "screen you" as part of their job "application" information process! If you want a job with them, withholding this information is NOT an option! They are then free to examine EVERYTHING about you and your friends as part of their decision-making process.

People who value their privacy and personal freedom have got to be out of their minds to willingly post ANY information concerning their personal and private lives, or information concerning their family and friends on Facebook. This also includes what you purchase, what you own, what you are interested in, etc! Is it any wonder Facebook's stock is going down the toilet?

AVS, I would love to enter the contest, but cannot and will not compromise my privacy because of all of the reasons listed above.
My response to those who say that "they can get this information anyway" is this: they can only gain access to what you willingly or unwillingly post concerning your personal and private life! Nowhere does it say that we have to willingly hand them this personal and private information to them on the Facebook silver platter.

lol so why are you using the internet at all then? why are you here? I mean if your that concerned throw away EVERYTHING digital, go back to oil lamps and pen and paper and move out to the woods if your that concerned about privacy because thats the only way your going to get it in a digital world. I mean unless your up to no good and doing something illegal what does it matter.

Anyhow I am biting at the bit to see who gets picked... man oh man I hope its me =^_^=

@Daniel Chaves. I agree with what you said. What amazes me, is the people who go on and on about the internet, facebook, etc. and privacy issues...are STILL using the internet. And in so doing, as you already know, they all are giving up a certain amount of information and privacy by default. And it's not just with the internet, either. Having a cell phone is another way ...but I'll spare you and anyone else reading this. I respect what people have to say, because that's their right...whether or not I agree with them. But it's purely a waste of time to rant about something that has nothing pertinent to do with this giveaway thread. But I too, agree with you regarding this awesome giveaway! Thanks to the folks at AVS, we even have a chance at winning such a cool prize! smile.gif
